Magic in Kalibayan runs on memory. The more painful, the more powerful. Burn too much, too fast, the world breaks open. Out come the monsters. Like the taklob. A shame eater wrapped in mirrors.

Thank you for the reposts, y’all!
Filipino horror. Memory-fueled magic. Mythical monsters. All good all good. Let’s lean in!

I can't even bring myself to read the rest of that drivel lol
I grew up hearing ghost stories and watching The Exorcist way too young.
Now I write monsters into my fantasy world.
New Substack: on Filipino myth, memory, and worldbuilding with fangs.

This started out as a post about lore. Then one of the gods asked “Do you love us?”
The gods in Kalibayan are weird, moody, and full of questions…very anxious. It’s just…mood 😂
What does memory become, when it walks? What does it leave behind? Excerpt from my novel-in-progress. Stirring shit up in the cauldron over here 🧙🏽‍♀️ ⏩ 📖 guianocon.substack.com

This world needs those
who know how to do that.
Those who could find a tunnel
that has no light at the end of it,
and hold it up like a telescope
to know the darkness
also contains truths that could
bring the light to its knees.
Grief astronomer, adjust the lens,
look close, tell us what you see.

A difficult life is not less
worth living than a gentle one.
Joy is simply easier to carry
than sorrow. And your heart
could lift a city from how long
you’ve spent holding what’s been
nearly impossible to hold.
My heart is broken at Andrea’s passing. But my heart is also full of poetry. And I’m so grateful for art. And for artists. And for my heroes like these poets who are fighting the good fight. And winning.

I still can’t stop thinking about Andrea Gibson. I saw them perform back in 2004 when they came to Santa Cruz. I was a freshman in college. I also saw Derrick Brown, Anis Mojgani, and Buddy Wakefield. That group inspired me to commit to the creative writing program. They still inspire me.
