Grumpy, middle aged Aussie software developer who also "lifts heavy shit and puts it back down again".
This whole thread - including a lot of the conversation - has me shaking my head in wonder... as a CTO and start-up co-founder.

It's no wonder the software industry is a fucking shit show.
From a CTO at a startup:

"We interview devs by giving them a task to build an app on the spot, from scratch (2x BE endpoints, some frontend.) They can use AI, ofc - and we dig into why they did this or that.

What is surprising: 14/15 devs from Meta failed this screening."

This post from the President of Windows basically reads like someone trained an AI on those SF billboards that just say incomprehensible nonsense.

To which I say “It’s Bond mate. Nobody cares about the lore.

Bond's first outing in Dr. No was released in 1962, where he was meant to be in his mid 30s.

He has appeared as seven entirely different people since then and should now be in his 90s. Get on with it.”

This thread does a better job of capturing why the cloud isn’t merely “renting a bunch of servers” than anything else I’ve seen recently.
📣THREAD: It’s surprising to me that so many people were surprised to learn that Signal runs partly on AWS (something we can do because we use encryption to make sure no one but you–not AWS, not Signal, not anyone–can access your comms).

It’s also concerning. 1/
PSA: we're aware that Signal is down for some people. This appears to be related to a major AWS outage. Stand by.

Obviously, it has no capability to do background processing. So there's a bunch of posts from irate users because ChatGPT told them to wait hours/days/weeks while it did absolutely nothing at all 💀

From the same dev: “it’s also that I cannot see management being concerned solving the information visibility that keeps slowing us down.

We’re rolling out AI coding tools for devs but no one thinks about the org silos that slow us down 10x more than any coding use case.”

You gently run your hand through the rack. You can feel it—pure cotton, rich wool, Irish linen. The plump buttonholes are handsewn; the buttons attached with a firm shank. You flip the price tag over. It's affordable

You buy the jacket and go home, which is only 15 mins away. Your apt is $600/month

I must be old because this actually sounds like fun.
The recruiter promised me a fun, dynamic work environment and targeted projects. Cut to now: I am knee-deep in legacy code, debugging for my life. If this is dynamic, I'd hate to see what static looks like.

@bobdahacker.com your Burger King write-up was beautiful! 👌 A real joy to read. And a masterpiece of lessons for developers in how not to build software in 2025.

It's a shame you took it down but very understandable.

Here's fun.
The Business Council of Australia put out a press release and new report about how to make healthcare more efficient. One of the big claims in the press release:

"AI has the potential to free up 30 per cent of a clinician’s time, allowing them to spend more time with Australians"

we also, at one point, got an email saying “Taco Bell is now an AI-first company”

we made tacos, what does AI have to do with that

What's the thing shopping centers/plazas and women's [clothes/accessory] stores lack?

Seats for husbands.

I'm happy to spend a full day shopping with my wife.
But the fact these places of commerce make men stand on the spot 90% of that time - or have to dodge other shoppers - is infuriating!

I just watched "Heads of State".
It was fun.
This is the old style "buddy" action movie we've been without for so long.
Suspend belief. Roll on the action. Make it lighthearted. Bingo!
And 2 enjoyable main actors.
We need more of this to relax to.

One trick I learned at Uber (where this got popular)

When writing an email that is longer than ~3 paragraphs / ~12 sentences: before sending, STOP

Re-read the whole thing

Add a new line to the top starting with tl;dr

Summarize the whole thing in one sentence

You're welcome
