I've actually thought about whether my heart does long for ESPN, but the fact is I just don't care very much about "ball goes into net". I do care about music, outfits, choreo. Maybe I should watch ice skating.

Also: kpop makes me understand why the olympics used to have poetry.

i think this is clearest in kpop, where there's a whole ecosystem designed to create essentially a kind of "competitive pop". not only are there lots of charts, there are also weekly music competitions with winners and losers, yearly awards and a whole recruitment/training system

For sure. I joke it's the closest I will get to sports and I think that's true. Saying "watch the new rookie that company X got this year, she's gonna go far" doesn't make much sense in western pop but is pretty normal in kpop and (i would imagine) college football

one of the reasons they're so mad at "no kings" is that they thought they were going to get a different kind of protest. they *want* the black bloc to be out there fighting with the cops. those are the images they've been trying to generate from "go." instead--

MAGA Rage at “No Kings” Boils Over—and It Quickly Backfires on Trump
As Trump allies smear the coming protests, a good writer on MAGA skewers the absurdity of these attacks on large swaths of Americans—and explains why our best recourse will be to turn out in force.

I'm in Brazil, watching GloboNews at my Airbnb. I remembered it being a fairly conservative network, but next to most American news it's like AntifaTV. Just hours of footage and outrage over the destruction of Gaza and the humanitarian crisis, with general consensus that this is insane

in the MGS2 production documentary they reveal that raiden was designed to be a twink in a tight bodysuit to get more female gamers playing MGS games. kojima had a nervous breakdown after getting feedback from jp schoolgirls that they were 'sick and tired of playing as old men' [snake]

For me it was David Bowie. When he died* I thought “damn, I guess really no one’s getting out then”

* if he really is dead. I also wouldn’t be surprised if he suddenly came back and announced it was all a stunt for a new album

I feel like none of this is SUPER insane. It’s the kind of stuff that makes perfectly normal nerdy bar talk. The problem seems to be less the comics exegesis and more the “unhinged billionaire” part

thiel, man, what the fuck are you talking about

He describes the plot of Watchmen, a 1986 graphic novel involving superheroes grappling with moral questions about humanity against the backdrop of impending nuclear war:

The antihero Ozymandias, the antichrist-type figure, is sort of an early-modern person. He believes this will be a timeless and eternal solution – eternal world peace. Moore is sort of a late-modern. In early modernity, you have ideal solutions, ‘perfect’ solutions to calculus. In late modernity, things are sort of probabilistic. And at some point, he asks Dr Manhattan whether the world government is going to last. And he says that ‘nothing lasts forever.’ So you embrace the antichrist and it still doesn’t work.

Thiel later finds biblical meaning in the manga One Piece, discussing how he believes it represents a future where an antichrist-like one-world government has repressed science. He believes that the hero, Monkey D Luffy, represents a Christlike figure.

In One Piece, you are set in a fantasy world, again sort of an alternate earth, but it’s 800 years into the reign of this one-world state. Which, as the story unfolds, gradually gets darker and darker. You sort of realize, in my interpretation, who runs the world and it’s something like the antichrist. There’s Luffy, a pirate who wears a red straw hat, sort of like Christ’s crown of thorns. And then towards the end of the story, transforms into a figure who resembles Christ in Revelation.

Thiel, along with a researcher and writer at Thiel Capital, explored these ideas at greater length in an essay for the religious journal First Things earlier this month.
