This is why eugenicists like Charles Murray (and Andrew Sullivan, his popularizer) are so determined to prove that biology=destiny. When one group is put into bondage, of one form or another, for 400 years, there may be some reasons other than the results of white-coded IQ tests to explain...

The south was a chattel slave empire until the 1860s and a de facto ethnic authoritarian state for the following century, which is well in living memory. I don't think we need to pretend that that hasn't left a distinctive cultural mark.

Groups are calling the deal a betrayal and promising to fight against its implementation tooth and nail.

'Democrat' is not a species with DNA: it is an empty box into which any combination of politics may be poured, same as 'Republican.' Try to pour in something good and useful.

This is my yearly reminder that
A) The Pilgrims never turned on the Wampanoags. The Puritans who did were a whole different group of people.
B) Thanksgiving became a holiday to celebrate whooping the Confederates.
Sometimes we can just enjoy traditions without guilt!

Thanksgiving is problematic. Giving thanks is not. As someone who wants to remember the attempted genocide of indigenous people but also likes a reminder to practice gratitude, I like to use Indigenous People's Month to support (and be grateful for) indigenous creators. A partial list! /1

All my friends and family just constantly believe ai stuff is real and send it to me with zero skepticism but then if I try to send or tell them anything absolutely real they'll be like "well everything's ai these days, how can you be sure" it is driving me insane
sorta coming around to the view that the social danger of genAI images is less that they'll make people believe fabricated things are real and more that they'll make people believe real things are fabricated

Thread; the main point for me is that (as we’ve already seen on here), people are going to assume that all journalists are just as unethical and compromised as Nuzzi (and Lizza). Journalism as a source of truth is fucked.
The reason that we reporters are focused so intensely on the L'affair Nuzzi is that, as Olivia notes, it is a basically apocalyptic scandal in the most literal sense of that term: a dropping of masks. It's acting as confirmation of every hideous story anybody's ever told about political journalists
this was bad before, but these are the most troubling and serious allegations you can make about a journalist. if they’re true, i genuinely can’t think of a worse scandal in the history of political journalism. devastating to our industry, to public trust as a whole, and to everyone in its orbit
