Correct. There might be riots if power 5 schools started spending on academics over sports though. Fans love their teams.

I should have clarified "Power 5." Plenty of universities are going into the red to fund sports for many different reasons.

University athletics are tied in name only these days. Totally separate orgs and budgets. I would say they are net beneficial to academic budgets, but not hugely so.
