Just a nerdy transfem who loves animation. Cooking up a cartoon idea I hope to make someday. 21 | She/They | Bi/Ace | 18+ only YouTube: https://youtube.com/@ghoulishtoonfan?si=8ig03vcBGZtl-HMh Discord: theghoulishcartoongal

I’ve delayed this long enough so here’s a preview 🧵 of the cartoon idea I’ve been working on over the past few years.

The show, currently titled On The Reel, is a surrealist comedy that’s (mostly) episodic and follows an ensemble cast of characters, most of whom live on an island called The Reel.

I know, in that post I said shows need to have a balance of good writing and good visuals or else it falls flat.

Also just keeping it real I’ve yet to come across these style over substance people you’re talking about.

Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle, and other shorts from the Terrytoons studio join the MeTV Toons lineup every Sunday afternoon starting 11/2 from 3p-5p.

Includes the classic Terrytoons shorts and the Ralph Bakshi produced 80s Mighty Mouse series.

That's not to say writing isn't important because it definitely is, you can't just have pretty visuals you need a proper balance of things, but it should go without saying that in a medium like animation the visuals are a high priority and I'm tired of self proclaimed cartoon fans thinking otherwise
ghoulishcartoongal.bsky.social
yes I'm aware its indie but with multiple experienced industry people heading this up I'm a lot less forgiving, and in all honesty it was probably intentional as your average animation fan and even industry artists genuinely believe that writing is more important despite this being a VISUAL MEDIUM.

So I watched Knights of Guinevere and tbh I have mixed feelings as the story has potential and the characters, while kinda basic, aren't terrible, but man do the visuals suffer in both design and movement, half the designs look like above average TOH rejects and the animation itself is very stilted

Based on my observations the only western cartoons from the last like 8 or so years that seem to have any genuine cultural relevance beyond cult followings are Bluey, TADC, the Vivzepop shows, possibly Smiling Friends and, depressingly, Cocomelon.

I feel like this is part of why anime is more culturally relevant than your average modern western cartoon these days, especially with young people

Fear of a Krabby Patty is a great episode of SpongeBob and a damn good start to season 4, if only the rest of post movie was consistently this good instead of being extremely hit or miss

Just finished watching Clampett's cartoons from 1945/46 again. IMO, those were his best years, where he was on his A-game, pumping out all these shorts with high energy:

Draftee Daffy, Greusome Twosome, Bashful Buzzard, Book Revue, Baby Bottleneck, Kitty Kornered and The Great Piggy Bank Robbery.

Normally this wouldn’t bother me cuz at the end of the day you can like what you like, but when this line of thinking is the predominant mindset in most animation circles to the point where wanting things to improve often leads to you being falsely labeled an alt right grifter it becomes a problem

and its not like tumblrcore shows cant be good, I like SU and *some* of later AT for example, but for whatever reason a sizable amount of zoomers and millennials have clung to these inbred shows to such a ridiculous degree that we now have shows being specifically designed solely to appeal to them
ghoulishcartoongal.bsky.social
Been watching some shows that could be labeled as tumblrcore lately and its rather telling that most of them blend together so easily, and I'm not just referring to the animation this is also about the characters, story beats, themes, overall vibe, comedy and even certain jokes they're all recycled
ghoulishcartoongal.bsky.social
Everything about this show is either wasted potential or just flat out awful I swear

Big shout-out to retraux cartoons that bring the source material back to their less mainstream but highly charming roots with a modern twist and be very stylistic as well.

I hate modern animation writing where a character will say something incredibly mild and the other character goes ‘whoah…you need serious therapy…’
And the character uses therapy speak like ‘you’re emotionally unavailable’ and thats it thats the whole joke

just to add my two cents about physical media - your favorite website, streamer, or online archive could vanish tomorrow due to any number of deliberate or accidental actions on the part of any number of people or organizations. Physical media? You have to destroy it YOURSELF
rollin.bsky.social
Counting just DVDs and up – not VHS or digital purchases – I have 493 movies and TV shows on physical home video.

I'm not saying you should be where I'm at. But I am arguing you should consider getting closer.

completely abandoned all creativity in favor of endless beanmouth and/or faux anime shows, granted I'm not about to claim Nick's great now or something as they've also defaulted to making pointless cashgrab revivals and still have the SpongeBob standard, also the schedule sucks but that's expected
ghoulishcartoongal.bsky.social
Disney Channel has always been in CN and Nick's shadow when it comes to having actual quality shows and even now that CN's basically dead they still aren't winning, like sure they have more shows right now but most of them aren't exactly good, or in P&F's case isn't anymore, and at least Nick hasn't

Greta Thunberg annoys the right because she's a reminder that it's possible to stay true to your moral principles even when it's inconvenient, and they fucking hate that

Here's some fun animation history trivia, the world's first ever toy-based cartoon was 'Hot Wheels'. Based on the Mattel toy of the same name, it ran for two seasons from 1969 through 1971 on ABC.

OMG thank you so much for your words of support it really means a lot!

also thank you for referring to me as she, I rarely get gendered correctly especially irl so its nice to see that there are people who do genuinely care despite all the darkness around.
