This is absolutely the best way to handle this sort of thing now that’s it’s fairly simple (I assume) technologically and I’d love to see it almost universally adopted.

That was one of the movies you picked for us to watch 25 years ago (along with CABARET, ZERO EFFECT, and the Ehle/Firth PRIDE AND PREJUDICE). I barely remember it now, need to Quibi it at some point.

I haven’t seen RADIO DAYS since its theatrical release but would still include Diane Keaton singing “You’d Be So Nice To Come Home To” (which is literally all she does in that film) among the loveliest interludes in cinema. A tiny part of her range but it’s what I thought of first.

This is an upsetting way for me to belatedly learn that Swaziland is now known as Eswatini. (That happened seven years ago.)

Fair point. And in fact as I say in ’95 the Tarr was a bootleg and I saw JEANNE DIELMAN in an NYU class (that I wasn’t taking), CÉLINE & JULIE at the Walter Reade. But I’d read about all of ’em and was on the lookout.

Maybe we have different definitions of “basically unknown” but as a young cinephile I actively sought out JEANNE DIELMAN, CÉLINE & JULIE and SÁTÁNTANGÓ, all in 1995 (actually having someone mail me a bootleg of the Tarr).

If this film is anything like JUDGMENT AT NUREMBERG (and I don’t see how it could be otherwise), “epic World War II thriller” is grossly misleading.

Not gonna name any names but the number of people hosting podcasts who can’t sound remotely natural reading their script always amazes me. You wrote it! Just say it like a person. But that’s not a skill everyone has, or even one that many people have.

Not sure which surprised me more, seeing Giovanni Ribisi credited as STRANGE DARLING’s director of photography or learning just now that Giovanni Ribisi refurbished the VistaVision camera used to shoot ONE BATTLE AFTER ANOTHER. That dude’s got a whole other deal goin’ on.

Way back in 1996 I was lucky enough to see XCXHXEXRXRXIXEXSX with Ken Jacobs hand-manipulating the print live (extending a few minutes of footage into an hour-plus, as I recall). A singular experience. R.I.P.
