You, a normal person visiting basilicas: wow very holy, what an atmosphere for prayer.

Me: what if all the giant statues in this city came alive and battled in a kumite?

Here we go.

Centrism-as-ethos fails to reckon with an existential-level belief in a hard moral universe, or the subsequent animating conviction to land squarely on the right + just side of that moral line.

Only a vibes-based “right side of history” morality gives room to break bread with those inflicting evil.

Dems ended the shutdown claiming one of the “wins” was SNAP funding through next September.

They dumb as hell.

a few candidates have talked about this but any Dem planning to run in 2028 should make it explicit: the next DOJ will, in fact, go after you if you’re funding this awful ballroom, or any other pay to play deals you make with this administration
Dimon on why JPMorgan Chase is not funding WH Ballroom:
We have an issue, which is anything we do, since we do a lot of contracts with governments here and around the world, we have to be very careful how anything is perceived, and also how the next DOJ is going to deal with it.

sigh
The headline every day should be that across the nation, across every district of voters, across all wings of the party, there aren’t even a *dozen* elected Republicans who oppose any of this.

A 2 cents that seems obvious to me: Donald Trump has THE JUICE and with Zohran he finally got someone in his office who also has THE JUICE.

Stone Cold Steve Austin sees The Rock start getting pops, he knows THAT is who you want to be in the ring with. Enemies, friends, doesn't matter. Heat is heat.

Even if we have free elections in 2028 & Trump leaves office, he'll die a free man in his bed one day, & his WH/Cabinet officials will go on to lucrative media, academic, & business sinecures after his presidency. We all know this. It's grotesque. But it's the central feature of 🇺🇸 politics forever.
This is the direct consequence of no senior officials, let alone GWB, paying any legal, personal, or professional price at all for torture & Abu Ghraib two decades ago. Our polity completely fails at elite accountability, and so here we are, on the doorstep of full-on fascism.
Please remember this torture happened to *every single person* who was kidnapped by ICE and sent to a foreign concentration camp without due process.

It doesn’t matter if they were citizens or even if they were criminals.

Every case is a violation of our Constitution and of Trump’s oath. #IMPEACH

Some smart person has made this point better than I will, but:

America CAN fundamentally and quickly remove harmful but ubiquitous parts of daily life (plastics, guns, social media, etc).

It’s already happened. Growing up, EVERYONE USED TO SMOKE INDOORS EVERYWHERE ALL THE TIME. And then we didn’t.

Studios are intimately familiar with playing hardball -- and are willing to endure pain to fight for what they want. When it's important to them, they'll do it.

Just something to remember the next time a negotiating artists' union gets called out by the trades for being 'unreasonable.'

legitimately i think one of the core failings of centrist pundits is that they have come to define themselves by what they are against--to chart their intellectual course by who they think is being annoying this week--instead of by recourse to genuine principle

For the entire shutdown, the NASA app’s photo of the day was Jupiter’s volcanic moon Io. Every time I swiped past it was that moon waiting for me.

The shutdown truly ended for me when I looked down to see a new photo. App is back at it.
