which is also like CRAZY to consider how frightening the idea of a free and public library was at the time to the status quo (and continues to be)

like, I know I’m preaching to the choir here but go support your local public libraries. They be radicalizing the youth AND adults for 100+ years now

that said our first library in St Louis was members only—that is: late 1800s golf clubs where old white dudes could smoke cigars and gasp at the mere thought of including fiction into their collections
