Long-winded sociologist. Orgullosamente mexicana. I study the impacts of U.S. immigration policy on transnational families and communities.
I've been waiting for this moment for over a decade! Just pre-orded @jamilahlemieux.bsky.social's first book, 'Black. Single. Mother.' Here's the link:

If you have 90 mins., stream Frybread Face and Me.

Like all good art, it is extremely culturally specific and, as a result, almost universal.

In this case, it's about Navajo culture and about every kid who got sent to spend the summer with their grandmother and cousins

The human misery and massive death toll that came from ending USAID was entirely predictable. Elon Musk relied on conspiracy nuts rather than employees and development specialists. Rubio, who previously defended the agency knew what would happen. They chose this. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

I am still figuring out how to talk about this without sounding like an anti-immigrant pundit, but...

Doing transnational research has allowed me to see how remittances lift people out of poverty and give them the stability they need in order to have a good life WITHOUT migrating.

I saw a student film about genocide in Gaza with footage of children starving, entire families killed, hospitals bombed, the names of journalists who have been murdered.

Words that stick with me: no matter what, we will never be able to tell our children we did not know what was happening

This is so awful. Never forget that the first law in the United States written explicitly to deny people was targeted at Chinese immigrants and impacted people in this neighborhood.

This is historical continuity of the worst sort.
More federal agents on Canal, counter protesters gather shouting the agents.

Florida welfare authorities have turned over a 17-year-old foster child to ICE.

He has already been separated from his mother, who was deported.

He may have been the victim of labor trafficking.

Yet, he was taken from his foster home in shackles.

A minor.

Senior immigration officials are currently urging officers to “turn the creative knob up to 11.” This will only increase warrantless arrests.

ICE has no shame in bypassing legal requirements

IMHO, the easiest way to boost event attendance is to send a calendar invite.

I see so many beautiful e-vites and Google Forms to RSVP for events, but they don't link to my Google Calendar, and I lose track of them more often than I'd like to admit (even events I'm really excited about!)

insanely funny to have the likely future Prime Minister of Canada just take my chart and intentionally crop out the watermark where I say I made it lmao

In my second piece for The Conversation, I explain that just the *threat* of deportation is enough to upend lives and communities.

Confused about Biden’s new executive action for undocumented spouses?

Jane Lilly López and I wrote an article for @theconversation.bsky.social that breaks it down.

theconversation.com/how-bidens-e...
How Biden’s executive order to protect immigrant spouses of citizens from deportation will benefit their families and communities
Biden’s executive action will shield approximately 500,000 undocumented spouses of US citizens, as well as 50,000 children, from deportation and give them the legal right to stay in the US.
