Long-winded sociologist. Orgullosamente mexicana. I study the impacts of U.S. immigration policy on transnational families and communities.
Incidentally, I got to see @jamilahlemieux.bsky.social speak at an event last week, and she is even more brilliant and glamorous IRL! And she is also SO NICE.

People always say don't meet your heroes, but it's never been an issue for me, so maybe get better heroes? 💅

+ a story: my mom is a Spanish-English bilingual teacher. Back in 2016, she ended a long friendship with another teacher who voted for Trump.

The Trump-voting teacher was also a bilingual teacher, and my mom looked at her and said, "Don't you realize immigrants are the only reason you have a job?"

The human misery and massive death toll that came from ending USAID was entirely predictable. Elon Musk relied on conspiracy nuts rather than employees and development specialists. Rubio, who previously defended the agency knew what would happen. They chose this. open.substack.com/pub/donmoyni...

Reading this, I think of the families I met who went from having houses with dirt floors and leaky roofs to real houses, w/running water and electricity.

Kids who stayed behind when their parents migrated got to finish school in Mexico, instead of having to drop out at age 12 like their moms did.

My recommendation is to check eBay for the ones you like! Frequently, people sell things that haven't been used much, so a "used" replacement might last another 15 years.

This aligns with previous research, e.g. "Lives in Limbo" (Gonzales 2016), so I am not surprised.

But seeing it so starkly is painful, especially as we contemplate the attacks on birthright citizenship that would make even kids born in the U.S. undocumented

In other words, undocumented children are just like other kids, but their immigration status comes to define their life and limit their opportunities as they get older.
