The very first lecture I had at art school, told us that we weren't there to learn to make beautiful images. We were there to learn to communicate ideas. (That could sometimes be beautiful but also not.)
If we wanted to make "soulless beauty" we were pointed to the door.

Sometimes internet friendships are rough because you can talk to someone really frequently and then they drop off the internet and you have no idea what happened to them. I have at least 3 people like that who I knew were struggling and then suddenly nothing.

Never felt more seen in a thread from a fellow educator. The proportion of my students that are unable (unwilling?) to follow written instructions is very nearly 100% in labs now. This is a dramatic, extremely concerning, change over the last few years and nothing I do to mitigate this has helped.
An issue we're seeing at all levels of university is that many students are simply refusing to do *anything*. They aren't reading the syllabus, aren't following assignment guidelines, aren't engaging with material, ignoring deadlines. And this might seem like old news, but it truly has ramped up.
