All the early Ensembl days of genome annotation in Cambridge, with @forbiddenunix.com and @micheleclamp.com and Ewan and many others, came after I left! I just saw y'all on the way in. A fascinating history- not one I have firsthand knowledge of, though I admired it from afar (and collaborate today)

When computers failed in the past, we used to say oops, a chaos monkey, must be cosmic rays or some other cute euphemisms.

Now, when a device fails I just say:

“Oh look, it’s done a BritBox”

“The syntax looked like a trendy new programming language called Java to satisfy Netscape management”

Godspeed JavaScript - you are still powering all the awesome, beyond anywhere anyone could have ever imagined.

Least of all “The Management”
30 years ago today, Netscape announced a new programming language, one that emerged from a frantic, week-and-a-half-long sprint. It ended up sticking around far longer than anyone could've expected.
In 1995, a Netscape employee wrote a hack in 10 days that now runs the Internet
Thirty years later, JavaScript is the glue that holds the interactive web together, warts and all.

Everyone is doing a “color of the year”, songs of the year thing.

Not to be outdone, here we present the #chromamagic chip of the year!!

Drumroll. 🥁

It’s 7.5PB 5/14!!!

(Wikipedia cornflower reference, and a Michael Harding Pale Violet is a good start to mix it!)

Fun fact, all the #hpc systems admin was the exact same dodgy ass unix soup of hurry up and make it work.

Perl expect over rs232 to provision hundreds of DEC boxes while techno blared from our builders portakabins round the back of the Sanger next to the bins…

#genomics
The very first "database" version of Pfam ( @ianholmes.org remembers those days - happy house music banging out on the last room of the corridor) was actually unix file system and a series of command line pipes between cut, awk, uniq and other unix tab delimited tools

The #chromapuss, and the #magicpuss in @micheleclamp.com’s studio.

They rarely sit together these days since being one years old, and basically stroppy teenagers. 🤣

Magic muscled in on Chroma’s favorite chair spot.

Chroma wasn’t for moving.

Reposting because the comment thread is pure 🧑‍🍳 💋

Also way before emoji were even a twinkle in our eyes, but now our arms and back hurt like hell when putting on a jumper, because six months ago we picked up the cat, and tore a major ligament or something.

🤣
I had the Orinoco model before Linksys existed. I had a silver and gold model and I ran them in a Caldera Linux server that ran some early configuration of NAT routing. I had to recompile the kernel to include the Orinoco drivers.

And it’s not my back that hurts it’s my elbow. Get off my lawn.

Harvie the Honda mower has sipped his last glass of petrol for the season!

Our lad did good this year, >26 hours on his new blades, and just shy of 57 miles of trotting behind him as he chomped through much grass and leaf.

He’s now eight, and still as sprightly as ever!

Merry thanksgiving everyone!!

Two top tips:

1. If you have a crowd, a pair of chickens always beats a turkey.

2. Quickly login to LinkedIn (right now) and block anyone with a post that uses the word “gratitude”, your future self will thank you.

3. Sorry if the chicken advice is too late.

Vet: So which one is this, Chroma or Magic?
Me: This one is, she is Chroma
Vet: She’s such a sweet girl, lovely soft fur.
Me: Yeah, she’s a big deal on the social media
Vet: I can only imagine

Apropos of DOE and other TLA chatter

I was thinking about this “story”, and mid morning run came up with:

“Just because you got caught with your fingers near the cookie jar this time, doesn’t mean at some point in the past, you weren’t elbows deep with your grubby paws rummaging through the Jammie Dodgers”

Made me chuckle. 🤣

The *WAY* bigger story to me here is it appears one can land a super senior vice president gig at Intel (who have recently laid off 10’s of 1,000’s) after being retired — at aged 75! 😱

Proper reporting. We’ve all had more than enough of the breathless company sponsored weblog puff pieces.

Doug is bringing back proper, old skool in the trenches opinion pieces. No “microsite” / “house account” pieces that have become all too common in our community.

Well done Doug!

⚠️ Turkey update for our new internet friend @mostlybree.kitrocha.com

15lbs, sold as “fresh not frozen” still had a plug of ice in the cavity after ‘defrosting’ for 3 days in fridge.

Yield: 5lbs of ground turkey + breasts for curry!

Basically 2/3’s bone and non edibles.

This bad boy is epic! 👇

Bit of #sc25 fun. For each ❤️ I’ll write a glowing and uplifting comment about an aspect of #hpc that sparks true joy.
