SCIENCE POLICY NEWS:

During Yom Kippur, all the members of the High Energy Physics Advisory Committee (HEPAP), myself included, received a letter thanking us for our service and telling us essentially that the almost 40 yo standing federal advisory committee was no more. ⚛️🧪🔭

Why that matters 🧵
DOE Consolidates Office of Science Advisory Committees
Six long-standing committees advising the Department of Energy’s Office of Science have been rolled into one.

"We rode bikes without helmets, and our cranial injuries made us stronger. We weren’t delicate little brainiacs, and we didn’t get trophies just for participating in spelling bees—especially those of us whose bike-accident-related brain damage left us unable to spell our own names."

Another movie I wouldn't have watched and enjoyed without #HATM. The soundtrack had caused the cats to cuddle up together. Time to check ketchup and duct tape supplies. Thanks to all for the discussion! #HATM

I'm such a sucker for a story where you put a bunch of really smart people in a room (or in a room and in space), and they work to solve a seemingly unsolvable problem and save the day. Also, Apollo 13 – this is fictional but that wasn't! #HATM

There is a lot of history of international cooperation between space programs; my favorite piece of material culture from those is the Apollo-Soyuz test project patch, which featured Snoopy (NASA's unoffical mascot) and the Russian bear. #TheMartian #HATM

If you really want to be pissed off about ignoring flight safety & having no remorse when it gets people killed, check out the @netflix.com doc on Challenger & see some people who should have never been in charge of other people’s safety/lives.

"F-word, F-word in gerund form, F-word again."

More great writing. It got the F-word in without saying the F-word, using NASA straight laced culture to keep it PG-13. #hatm
