Heh I immediately zoomed in on NiGHTS! Did you ever do anything on Saturn/SH2? I’ve been thinking about dabbling with some 2D stuff.

Yeah my first set was an old B&W hand-me-down. I never appreciated until later that the colours “degraded” so gracefully into greyscale.

Haha! I bet it will look cool in B&W

The ROM file is in the link if you’d like to try it. Looks gorgeous on a real telly. (But CRTs are hard to photograph so you’ll have to believe me!)
Photo of a CRT telly with Grongy’s lovely stylised SINCLAIR logo.

Forgot the alt text! That’s a Spectrum screenshot of the boot up message, decorated with a stylised Sinclair logo by very talented pixel artist Grongy.

* those “free” bytes are actually used by certain software which will crash if the values have been altered.

There’s loads of free* space in the standard ROM, with a bit of compression you can squeeze in graphics too.

I took a notion to draw a wee comic last night, based on my real-life experience where I felt bad for some sticks.
Comic page. 2 Panels.

Panel 1: Me walking my dog in the woods.

Caption: Not to brag - but I walk my dog, okay/

Caption: We often find ourselves in the local woods.

Panel 2: Me looking at a big stretch of boggy muck.

Caption: There's this one big stretch of boggy muck on the pack we take.

Caption: You're probably thinking that we just shouldn't go this way. Hey you might be right. First time for everything, as they say. Comic page. 1 Panel

Panel 1: Me and the dog walking over the boggy muck, elevated on sticks laid into the dirt.

Caption: Every few weeks, though - someone lays down a very useful series of branches so we can cross with ease.

Caption: That's nice isn't it? Someone taking the time and expending the effort to build a little bridge.

Caption: I often wonder who it is. Perhaps it's more than just one person. That's a comforting thought.

Panel 2: Me looking at a big stretch of boggy muck.

Caption: There's this one big stretch of boggy muck on the pack we take.

Caption: You're probably thinking that we just shouldn't go this way. Hey you might be right. First time for everything, as they say. Comic Page - 1 Panel. Me crossing the sticks, we see all the previous sticks crushed down deep into the dark mud.

Caption: It's funny how guilty I feel when a branch breaks - like I've undone their good work, y'know?

Caption: But within a weeo or two, there's a new set of branches ready to be trodden into the mud.

Caption: It's hard not to think about all those other branches, crushed down deper in the dark with every new layer. Comic Page 2 panels.

Panel 1: Me standing in the woods looking down at the path.

Caption: maybe it's my turn to lay down some branches for the next folk who come this way.

Caption: God knows it wouldn't take long - and I definitely have the time.

Panel 2: Shot of my hands holding the sticks I'd need.

Caption: Nah

Ten years ago today, my wee baby came into my life. She’s been a great source of pride all that time, and from her perch in the downstairs toilet, she never fails to make me smile.

My daft band has a new song out about your da being radicalised by right wing propaganda online, even though he told you to be careful online when you were growing up.

Reminder: if you miss the ZX81 and long for a DIY version to tinker with Z80 code (and CP/M - but that’s another story) you need to look up RC2014.

You don’t need to be a wizard with the soldering iron to build your own little 8-bit computer.

Fifteen year old you would be proud.

Yeah that’s not really the way I use YouTube to be honest. I’m with you on the intro/outro framing it as show. I really curate my subs list and ruthlessly prune the watch history to keep the algorithm better trained - so almost every show I watch is deliberate, and so I do treat it like TV 📺😊☕️

If you're looking for video game books by the way, Pen and Sword have been doing incredible work in that field and don't really get the same credit as Bitmap or Read Only Memory. Well worth a look: www.pen-and-sword.co.uk/Gaming/c/357

Oh yeah I completely agree! I was just thinking of my subscribed channels like Lee and Adrian. When it comes to “help, my dishwasher is leaking!” I’m not watching that with a relaxing brew in Big Chair, ha!

Hahah, I’m the opposite. I make a fresh cup of tea for every episode and do watch most of them on Big Telly!
