He walks over, pushes up one sleeve of his hoodie, and curls his fingers into a fist. He sticks his hand into the sunlight. Wisps of smoke rise as his skin sizzles like bacon. The flesh boils and cracks. My hand flies to my mouth but it does nothing to hide my shock. Creatures made of fire are one thing, but to watch human flesh smoke and boil, to hear it snap like twigs in a campfire, makes my stomach flip. He stays like that for a handful of seconds until he wrenches his hand away, cradling it to his chest. He winces, grinds his teeth together, as he closes the distance between us so he can show me his hand as the skin hardens like rock. “Will it stay like that?” I ask. “No. I’ll get it looked at when I go home.” “Sure. What exactly is a Chimera?” He rolls his sleeve back down. “Well, in Greek mythology, they’re monsters that are one part lion, one part—” “I meant you. And Zev. And that woman.”
