in Demolition Man, Sylvester Stallone plays a supercop from the violent 1990s frozen in time and sent to the future. He winds up fighting a group of terrorists until he realizes they're just trying to steal food, at which point he refuses to continue attacking them

Honestly the type of guy who is in a long term, supportive relationship who insists on behaving like an incel anyway is becoming my least favorite type of guy.
LORD STENCH IS GONE AND SO IS ALL HIS TRASH!!!!!!!
Yeah our rent will be more but this time it is genuinely worth it for the office space & not having to steward the drunk emotional tantrums of a man in a relationship who insists on acting like an incel.

In case it needs to said again, it's okay to make hateful people uncomfortable, if fact, we want them to be. Making concessions to lessen their discomfort just validates their bigotry and hatred.
one of the characteristics of white supremacy that often gets overlooked is "right to comfort", and when denied comfort in spaces, folks will use their tears manipulate others to accommodate them.

Keep them uncomfortable, deny them the comfort of being hateful.
What's interesting to me about this is the assumption that this space MUST be open to conservatives, a group that has repeatedly created social networks that intentionally cater only to themselves. No one on the left ever went on to Truth Social expecting a warm welcome.

you could not waterboard this out of me. “we didn’t understand why people use steam”
I legitimately didn't know they were competing with Steam and it's crazy to me that they burnt so much money on what sounds like something with very little (or wildly misguided) market research.
Watching Takaichi do her level best to maintain composure while having to direct his insane grandpa around each function is so surreal. Ma'am you give this maniac gold and golf toys and he casually mentions bombing the shit out of any opposition just for the hell of it. Wild.
While I'm dubious about someone who admires Thatcher in this political climate, what a hideously disgraceful slap in the face to be the newly-minted, first woman PM of Japan and have to immediately deal with the senile American President.
Twitter just doesn't appreciate the real icons these days.

SCOOP: several days ago Zohran Mamdani was overheard saying he "needs" to eat dinner. An inside source confirmed he had eaten breakfast and lunch that day, giving him an estimated 2+ weeks without additional calories before he might have died from starvation
It’s not that I don’t like this person’s work when it crosses my dash. It’s nice enough. But I see so much more of them posting some pretty dubious proof of plagiarism from other sources that often makes me wonder which manga they’re ashamed of tracing from.
There is someone I don’t follow but whose work I see often whose posts seem to be primarily complaints about being copied, being mistaken for an artist they’re sure is copying them, and posting works with a pretty generic style that I’ve seen like 30 different artists abandon after their teen years.

Maybe the thing that gives me a pulse-pounding throbbing headache is when I think of how techbros sold ChatGPT to universities as ‘revolutionizing’ higher education and our institutions just forked over money without even asking for actual evidence
When people learn with ChatGPT instead of following their own searches, they end up knowing less, caring less, and producing worse advice, even when the facts are the same.

Friction is an essential ingredient for learning! Convenience makes us shallow.

43 years ago today, readers the world over opened their newspapers and gazed upon cow tools for the first time. happy birthday cow tools. you look great.
Iirc this coincided with the dotcom bubble. American culture is such a grift lmao
Sequels and sitcoms also. It was like a deliberate rebranding of American culture being a macrocosm of San Francisco culture. It was so contrived, too. Movies that originally had a solid sense of place getting a san Francisco vacation or move contrivance just to film there and pitch it as THE place.
If I do ever take a media studies course I want to write a paper on why so many films of the 90s were set in San Francisco. My supposition is that studio execs of the time we're noticing how much money was pooling in silicon Valley & pushed to focus there to try and squeeze money outta that region.

reading slaughterhouse 5 for the first time and i was absolutely knocked senseless by this passage, which is so true and relevant that it feels like it was pulled from a history book
It's a shame most of the depicted authors are pre-1960 because a Haruki Murakami character would be a really fun addition to the roster.
Much like Sōseki Natsume's final work the Russo-Japanese war never ended and now its being fought by the gay mafias on the streets of Yokohama.
Akutagawa will still deeply value life while being disillusioned by humanity's callousness while Atsushi will be forever striving to prove his right to live. Philosophy is simply an articulation of personal values and also this boy's clothes are alive with knives and this other boy is a tiger.
(I love also that this series is making me read more again and I really needed that shot in the arm. And a cohort of like-minded pretentious lit nerds that like anime to talk to about this shit.)
