Astraia had almost felt like a sister. Until she hadn't.  Until she really, truly hadn't. Geni had nothing else to take the thoughts away but to dig a fingernail into the back of her wrist and hurry away, letting the cool air whip her hair around with abandon until she was well away from all that, the leaves, the school, the memories. Her reflection in a street-level window showed her a glimpse of the extent of the damage. Of course her hair would be a mess going to dinner. Nothing could ever be perfect. Who cared anyway? She was thirty-two, and already done. Just like the constant need for raking the leaves at this time of year, there was only so much salvaging even possible now. Maintenance mode. That was all that was left. None of that heady rush of youth and untested dreams of what love could be.

Cannot recommend Cassandra Khaw's The Salt Grows Heavy enough. A fairy tale of cannibalism and vivisection, self-fashioning and monstrous regeneration, love wondrous and strange and invincible--and all wrapped up in prose that's marvelously itself.
