Tired, trans autistic oddball writing SF/F stories about others like him. Loves animals. NO AI. The (2nd!) slowest cyclist in Minneapolis.

98k/100k on adult sci-fi dystopia, HUMAN-ISH.
88k/100k on adult solarpunk fantasy, THE KING IN THE MOUNTAIN.

TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from Okjökull to Ok (jökull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Me at 1am, 3/4 of the way through this chapter, quoting this repeatedly while shaking myself:
Go to bed; tired is stupid.

Finding the time and energy to write (almost) every day is by far the hardest part. 🫠 I work 40+ hours a week and do a lot of the executive functioning in my house. The little bit of 'me time' I get is always writing time. Hash tag the struggle.
#pretendpanel, I hope you find today's question just as engaging as yesterday's, even if the emotions might be a bit more negative surrounding the question...

December 6th: What was the most challenging aspect of writing for you in 2025?

The vitamin d3 and magnesium in my stomach, knowing that they're the only things keeping me sane while I finish this freaking draft:
a hand is reaching out towards another hand in a pile of leaves with the name tanner on the bottom
Alt: Buzz and Woody reach for each other with solemn faces and hold hands as they slide deeper into a trash compactor.

There really IS no socially acceptable way to ask, "are you being sincere right now or just giving me one of those platitudes I'm supposed to pretend to accept but never actually take you up on", is there?

Hashtag... I love being autistic...... 🥲

Me two years ago, a lifelong Texan who'd never lived anywhere cold: oh my gosh!! How does anybody exercise in the winter up there?

Me today: you ever heard of SNOW SHOVELING??? 🥶

"The best thing you can do for your writing is get a creative writing degree", LOL.

The best thing I've done for my writing is read, examine story structures, listen to my beta readers, and - most importantly - just write a lot.
What’s the worst writing advice you’ve ever received? The write what you know quip doesn’t work out well when readers don’t like what you know 😂 #writingq #WritingCommunity

“Have Yourself A Merriam Little Christmas”

Merriam, a career-oriented lexicographer from the city, returns to her small town for the holidays and meets Webster, a ruggedly handsome librarian, who shows her the true DEFINITION of Christmas.

Yeah, I write for myself. But I also write because I want to hopefully one day give someone the same feeling I have when reading Lord of the Rings, A Song of Ice and Fire, Berserk, One Piece. Things that give me life. Even just giving a fraction of that feeling to someone else would be worth it.

The death of browsing is part of the reason art is the way it is now. Our opinions are largely fed to us by algorithms. Spending a spare 15 minutes wandering around a bookstore or comic shop or video rental place was how you found stuff you wouldn't ordinarily pick up and thereby expanded your taste
Bookselling is like the most "people go to the store and buy what looks cool to them without a particular agenda" type business left, and your purchases have a huge influence on what is ordered, what is displayed, and what is recommended.

Clarion is *wildly* ambitious. The head of the Magna Elysium program, he selects great leaders of history to be preserved through vampirism for a time when humanity may need them -- he desperately hopes to be the next one turned, and he will do anything to make it so.

Had to make a trip to the Fancy Menards® where they have a piano player on weekends.

Was wandering through the aisles with my husband when a new song started and my head shot up like a sleeper agent hearing their code word, because it was *the freaking Animal Crossing New Horizons theme song*

But if you love yourself, you can love both yourself and the person you love. Your love becomes twofold.

I love that my very sweet polite Minnesotan coworkers are all corroborating my story that I'm going back to "Hell" (Texas) this weekend, to the point where someone said "oh yeah Everett's going to Hell" very casually and my boss was horrified LMAO

Jokes aside I REALLY don't want to go back though 🫠

Just call my brain Pimp My Ride, because I always end up putting an extra book('s worth of words) in my book so I can book while I book (read: cry while I edit).

I always feel a little like two parts of me are arguing when I edit, lol.

The editor part of me says "we're here to trim the fat, idiot, you KNOW you're an over-writer so don't get so precious about it" while the writer part of me is clinging to the excess 15,000 words like:

Basically this. Silas is recently divorced, slightly less-recently expelled from college and just had to move in with his sister. On page one he is solidly at rock bottom, drinking his blues away in a bar.

...Then someone starts talking about vampires.
