NEW VIDEO!
Horror and fantasy have always been strongly related through their shared gothic lineage and the survival horror genre in particular has long adhered to a dungeon crawling game structure which greatly influences the ways in which its stories are constructed. Let's explore that!

I'm spending far too much time on the Giantess Wiki lately
I'm kinda getting obsessed with multimedia CDs. Some of what I'm looking at is in my existing wheelhouse--digital magazines, electronic literature, etc--but I'm also trying really really hard not to buy "Wines of the World" right now. I don't even drink wine!
I'll learn how to type on a phone eventually.
this how you insert a break into your exposition

Actually speaking of the "kids these days" stuff I don't really have much patience for handwringing over zoomer “brainrot” humour because I grew up with "We Drink Ritalin" (actual title!) and other animutations on albinoblacksheep. We weren't an erudite generation
It's defo not the only reason fewer people are reading books, but talking about reading as though it's like eating your veggies probably isn't helping.
what's even more confusing is the FFVII modding community calls the original Windows 98 version "PC98". It's fuckin rough out here
I frequently feel frustrated by horror literary magazine's restrictions on transgressive content but this is next level.
Especially the blanket NO to all epistolary fiction. What the fuck?

People talk about how you have to play and beat Nier Automata multiple times to get the full story but you don't. That's a formalism. The game has distinct chapters and uses the "ending credits" as chapter breaks. The game you're thinking of is Nier Replicant. That's the sicko shit.
Obviously the place a system has in the overall flow of the game is hugely important, but every critique I've seen has addressed that, tending to state that the hugely increased sophistication of the combat reduces tension and increases tedium compared with the simpler combat of the older games.
I mean, it has dodges, parries, light/heavy attacks and a lock-on so I feel it makes sense to comment on the systems it's so obviously drawing on?
The original French seems to have much stronger poetic form, but what's neat about this volume is that you get both the original text and the translation facing each other! I have some other Old French romances that were straight up converted to prose so this is greatly appreciated
the best part about reading old romances is always the poet going off on one before actually getting to the story tbh.

i mean in this particular case it does kinda relate to the themes of the work but it doesn't always!
Reading Roman de Silence (Sarah Roche-Mahdi translation) and I love how it opens with a lengthy tirade about how much the poet hates rich people.

Gaming history blazing hot take: if recreating the experience of playing old games via CRT shaders is important, it's equally important to recreate crappy old emulators so you can experience what it was like to play these games for the first time on a low-env 90s PC.

the important context here is that dobbyn's lighting and shading were out of this world. often very soft and diffuse to create this moody, otherworldly atmosphere
ah god dammit I forgot the alt text
Total adoration for Nigel Dobbyn's work on the Knuckles stories, too. For as much as I love the IDW art, these two might still be my favourite Sonic artists.
Watching weekly (daily in DBZ's case in the UK) at a set time decided by the broadcaster really helped w this for me. It was just something I did for half an hour after school, not something I set out to finish, as such.

(that being said i get stuck into long ass shit all the time...)
the evolution of language is fun 💙📚
you ever read patchwork girl, the hypertext fiction by shelley jackson? it's not an adaptation as-such but it's the best attempt I've ever seen at building on the original novel's ideas.
MUDs were the first online multiplayer experiences I got to have in my own home. My internet was far too slow for the FPS games my friends were playing!

Richard Bartle has some great stuff preserved on his website, including emails between players of the early iterations mud.co.uk/richard/mud....
