Dear funding agencies,

I know we all want to discover the wonder drug that will cure the horrible diseases, but to do that, we need to invest in basic, unsexy, foundational research on how the systems work. Funding can’t all be drug development.

Sincerely,
Looking for basic research grants.

Decades of reef work prepared us for bad news… but not this. 160 scientists now confirm the tipping point is here. What we do next decides what still survives. 🌊

After the Bleaching
“Hope with teeth” is not a comfort mantra; it’s a discipline of clear seeing and sustained action. A kind of emotional triage. We grieve what’s gone, stabilize what’s wounded, and mobilize everyone wh...

Shoal of 5-7'long Tarpon ( Megalops atlanticus) moving past me in back reef area of a caye in Belize. Love these fish... Only two species of Tarpon survive, the Atlantic Tarpon (here) and the Indo-Pacific. Even their order (Elopiformes) is tiny - 9 species in 2 genera. Many fossils species tho 🦑🧪

Nice!!! My peppers and tomatoes did very well this year in raised beds (aside from forgetting to plant serranos - doh!!), but always looking for decent way to grow more, or get better yield with same or less input of soil and labour.

thanks!! I will look into this! I have done similar for potatos and some similar plants, but never peppers. Going to give a try next spring.

Half of my “job” is to visualize things in new & unique ways. It is a serious struggle at times I often fall far short. These idiots choose to recreate what’s already out there w/ a slight twist. Not a creative bone in their bodies. They NEED AI. No artist will make their moronic visions come true.

4 more quarts of roaster tomato, garlic, basil tomato sauce with some spice as well. (Just a touch at the end…) I think this is last batch entirely from Garden. Only a few tomato’s and no onions left (the onion in this batch was store bought 😒) but now have 20 quarts of sauce in our pantry.

Over half of the sidewalks on my 2 mile walk home from Eye doctor appointment were built by WPA. So was a large part of the high school here. I have begun keeping my eye out for these plaques around town. Finding them all over the downtown area.

Brenna brought antler treats home from Maine for the pups to apologize for being gone for 5 days. I think they forgive her.

Sales told them to do it that way. Increases sales by (insert fictional overhyped number here) as sales for replacement set for buds that end up unrecoverable, broken from secondary impacts, land in pile of “ooooh gross” etc.

I understand where you are coming from and to be sure I don’t disagree with you in whole. I too am against death penalty in 99% of cases. I get what you are trying to say re: Germany, but they didn’t hang “all” Nazis. Far from it. Not sure the “measured” response will work here & now.

That is certainly one argument, and one I have examined from time to time, but it has major problems - ethical, legal, and in achieving the end goal of protecting and guarding whatever form of democracy we have (if we can keep it) when all this is said and done. But all the options have problems.

Speaking of Baltimore and NSA, have to start designing a theme for posters & program for Portland. Kinda hard right now, really want to theme it around the Frog, but that won't fly. 2024 was Charlotte, so it was NASCAR theme. I do try to make it local & shellfish related, but Charlotte? 🐡
Final program cover for the National Shellfisheries Association conference in Charlotte, NC.
I usually try and tie the theme to the location and shellfish in some way. Same for the Film Fest poster - Try and tie that to the local arts scene and then work it to fit with the overall conference colors/theme. But Charlotte? Not much shellfishing in Charlotte, also not much history of shellfish, shellfishing, or shellfishing related industry. Charlotte seemes most well known for 1) Big Banking, 2) BIG evangelical religious roots, 3) NASCAR. It was a no brainer for a science conference perspective.

So modified a model of a Mustang to make it make it more closely match a NASCAR Ford Mustang, gave ait a coat of pain from our color palette , slapped a bunch of NSA logos and easter eggs on it for the livery, and then composited it into the Charlotte Motor Speedway in a 4 different poses/scenes (one for cover, another for each of the big entrance posters, etc) big Main Hall poster thanking all our sponsors - with the NSA Ford Mustang at the bottom. This poster is 38"x 96" in real world. Film Fest postere, went with a look inspired by the pole position race graphics used by NASCAR and every broadcaster out there. I think it worked well, especially with the NSA Mustang leading the pack into the actual race. screen shot from blender of lining up the shot on footage of a recent race.

It's the simple ones that catch me every time - linear algebra, calc, matrices, sure no problem, 2+2? Oh noes! And my spelling when I am thinking too fast is HORRENDOUS (not to mention my spelling of many words (colour, labour etc) throws people off (including editors). And I worked in ocean optics!

Lol! Sometime you, me and David need to share some libations - preferably overlooking some semi-abandoned wetlands or beach. NSA will be at Baltimore in '27, We've invited David to give a workshop and keynote. Maybe we can meet up then (if not before)
