Comics and comic con fanatic. I can't write, I can't draw, I can't colour, I can't edit. Therefore, *of course* I have a podcast, are you crazy??

Lots of new followers lately: hello there, I guess!

A re-introduction: my name is Leonard Sultana, I'm a middle aged nerd based in Yorkshire, married to Caroline, currently looking after my dad who is not in a good way but we’re muddling on, I guess.

What’s with the San Diego thing? Well…

Sorry, guys: I know this year seems to have set a particularly low bar for this but I get the sneaking suspicion that 2026 is going to be waaaaaaay stupider. Like, 'the Matrix has gone beyond glitching, it's Star Wars Galaxies-level hating its users' idiotic.

Alex talks here about mastering t'basics which, from there, you can do what comics excels at which is being able to bend and play with 'focal length', perspective and lighting to your hearts content. Go and check @jockbsky.bsky.social THE LOSERS, he goes extreme at every opportunity, a masterclass.
Then you can add on high angle shots, low angle shots, extreme closeups, superwides, over the shoulders, POVs, and more.

Plus fun tricks like the more headroom the character has (distance between top of their head and top of panel), the weaker / more isolated they seem

* CLOSEUP: Chest/shoulders up. For reactions, emotional intimacy, etc.

You can do a pretty great basic job cutting between these three shots! But a whole page of one shot size? You can make it work (9 panel grid of closeups) but it’s a special situations thing

Wides are often the opening shot/panel to establish your scene

* MEDIUM: Waist up. For smaller motion/action, two characters together, etc. Cutting from a medium shot to a different medium shot is offen clumsy. Go wider or tighter.

Another way to think about it is there are three standard shot sizes in cinematography, and while comics is so much more than film, knowing some camera basics can help:

* WIDE: Shows whole body (inc feet!). Great for showing environment, spatial relationships, big action / comedy. (1/more)
my comics advice is: show feet

it sounds like dumb online meme nonsense but it's not; every 2-3 pages make sure you draw your character so their feet show, it grounds them in the environment and forces you to vary your panel composition.

I hope everyone can remember your art is more than the numbers it gets. The internet is not as kind to art as it was a decade ago. I hope everyone can keep creating even if it's just for themselves.

Rewatching THE ACOLYTE. I know *exactly* what kind of reaction this'll get from Star Wars 'fans'... but it's the show that's intrigued me the most, that's asked the more interesting questions, that has the most going on under t'surface. It's the one I find myself going back to more than the others.
