Text of a letter sent to the women and Equalities minister on 26th November 2025 Dear Bridget, Re: Serious concerns with the leaked draft EHRC guidance We are writing with deep dismay and concern over the leaked draft of the Equality and Human Rights Commission's new code of practice on single-sex services, reported last week in The Times. According to the report, people working in a whole range of jobs - from hotels to hospitals, cinemas to shops, leisure centres to care homes - could be told to question people about their sex "based on how they look, their behaviour or concerns raised by others", and refuse access "if there is doubt they are telling the truth about their sex" This is obviously extremely worrying and risks putting trans and non-binary people in unsafe and deeply uncomfortable situations. Not only will these groups be affected, women and girls will also be challenged to prove beyond doubt that they are female just to go to the toilet, or face being turned away for "not looking female enough". Is that really the kind of society we want to live in? That would put women and girls at risk, and would be a dangerous backwards step for hard-won women's rights In addition, it would be totally unworkable for the many businesses, charities and councils who would be expected to implement this guidance. It would make things even more difficult for small hospitality businesses that are already struggling with rising costs, and put staff in a very difficult position that no one should have to face just to do their job. the letter continues: The leaked draft also suggests that trans and non-binary people could be excluded from public spaces altogether through a lack of alternative facilities - which would appear to be in direct conflict with the Supreme Court's ruling that its interpretation of the Equality Act "does not cause disadvantage to trans people" and that they are protected from discrimination. Apart from the substance of the draft code, the fact that both parliamentarians and the public are finding out about it through leaks to the press is deeply alarming We called long ago for a draft to be put before Parliament for proper scrutiny and debate, so that these concerns could be identified and worked through properly and transparently. The government's refusal to do so has led to this unacceptable state of affairs, which is causing a huge amount of distress and anxiety - especially to trans and non-binary people - and adding to the toxicity of an issue that is already very sensitive and fraught. Individuals and organisations have been left waiting for clear guidance for too long. We therefore urge you to bring forward new, workable and inclusive proposals for full debate and scrutiny in Parliament as soon as possible. It is vital that the final guidance ensures that everyone's rights, safety and dignity are properly protected. He casually elides the truth about language competency when someone is shortlisted and appointed for a job in the NHS. We have staff who are multilingual including English spoken and written proficiency .
I’m trilingual myself. Rupert speaks fluent English and BS.

It would make a big difference if government departments withdrew from Twitter and moved to Bluesky, followed by at least the more progressive parties. Journalists would have to follow. Staying on Twitter isn’t engaging in debate, but merely adding a veneer of respectability to a far right platform.

And most of the families in receipt of the benefit are working already, often several poorly paid jobs. We should call this corporate welfare because it enables companies to pay poverty wages, and the public turns a blind eye.

I am angry with Rupert Lowe perpetuating this narrative. His constituents are accessing James Paget. The NHS trust offers female chaperones - I am offered one every time I even get my throat checked!
