Even I’m amazed when I visit. Can’t help thinking of the 1980s Poland when I’d visit relatives. Was a 1950s time warp. Now as cosmopolitan as anywhere.

When I gave a lecture in beautiful Gdansk, the medical students wanted to take me for dinner. I asked for traditional.

They picked sushi 🍣😊

Here’s the survivors’ photo. Great bunch of colleagues ( minus a few who left a bit early — *tsk tsk* — but they’re great too )

Indeed. A huge waste of potential, to say nothing of the unfairness.

EU structural funds previously supported regional development. The UK Shared Prosperity Fund is a feeble substitute.

It’s ironic & sad that English & Welsh regions that voted Leave have suffered disproportionately.

Many things at play here, but hard to ignore the fact that the UK left an enormous trading bloc and raised barriers to commerce with its nearest neighbours for petty nationalist reasons based on disinformation.

Want economic growth and improved regional investment?

Rejoin the EU.

🇵🇱 My @thetimes column: Poland’s economic miracle

12 out of 17 Polish regions are now richer than West Wales. It has faster internet, cheaper electricity and more high speed rail than Britain

When it comes to regional development it’s the UK, not Poland, that needs to catch up

Feeling unwell?

If you have COVID symptoms, TEST
If you test positive, ISOLATE
If you can’t test, MASK

Protect yourself and others (especially high-risk people) - it still matters!

Also, if you're "in bed with flu", it's almost certainly Covid.

After a long pause, I've just done another England Covid & NHS update as we head into the autumn/winter season.

TLDR: we're in a significant Covid wave now, the NHS is stretched, get boosted if you're eligible.

Something slightly different for me

Just chaired a French language teachers’ conference arranged by Alliance Française d’East Anglia

Over 50 teachers joined online to hear about the challenges of teaching French and how we can work together to address them 🇫🇷📚
