I rarely defend Americans, but we shouldn't forget that American GenZ started the student protests in 2023, were beaten to a pulp by police, got thrown out of school, lost scholarships, had their degrees revoked, etc. An Egyptian friend of mine joked "those kids were Arab Springed" Funny but true.

Honestly, being generous: 2 stars. An Academy of Liars felt like one big illusion of a lot of things: dark academia, Gothic horror, explorations of loss, identity, escapism, and magic. But you can't make a good story out of a collection of vibes, which is what this book did. Unfortunately.
