As a singular American figure, the 47th president might have a singular effect on Roberts's legacy. That's why the Trump opinion looms so large. It would be a tragedy for Roberts if his long tenure as chief justice were reduced to that single ruling and opinion because the portents of doom in the Sotomayor dissent prove accurate in the extreme-and turn what
Roberts meant as the solution to a problem of constitutional governance into a license for autocracy.

There is no connection between troop payments and federal employee layoffs. Zero.

They are paying the troops with multiyear R&D allocations within DOD. This is also illegal by the way! But completely disconnected to the layoffs.

I don't get the RIFs. None make more sense in the shut down than they would at any other time. They're cost-cutting but not in away that preserves funds that could be spent elsewhere. It's not "we're using these savings to keep air traffic contollers working," it's "we want to fire people."

RFK fired the CDC official (w/decades of experience) leading the measles outbreak response. It's been decades since we've had such a large outbreak. And just to ensure they they can spread the measles outbreak even farther, they also fired the leadership for the center focused on immunization.
