Wrote a novel in 2020 about a man who invents cryosleep to avoid uncomfortable politics. Every four years he checks in on the politician morphing a border control agency into a personal paramilitary religious cult. Last time the man wakes up, his daughter runs the agency at the dictator’s righthand.
yeah, I’m finding the first two rooms to be pretty intensive, as far as setting up basic parameters of the game, but this exercise using Inform is also a really fun way to rethink narrative in general
been listening/watching documentaries about Infocom, always admired the group, never really appreciated how small/spunky it was— jealous, really, would love for my writing to develop in that kind of environment— TRINITY by Brian Moriarty influenced my young self as much as Tolkien/Lucas
when you initially posted thought I’d give it a shot, won’t make the deadline, but started my first Interactive Fiction nonetheless
new thing won’t touch the original thing —> original thing might need to be damaged, but only a little —> guess we have to remove a sizable portion of the original thing —> oh we are replacing the original thing entirely … whether a building or Democracy itself, same well-worn historical strategy
the thing about being evil I just don’t understand is it seems so exhausting
really wish there was an alternative term for Infocom “feelies” —makes me think of insect cilia #if
“Writers are the most important people in Hollywood. And we must never let them know it.” —Irving Thalberg
“You might also like… the book you wrote.”
I agree with you. Public disclosure without consequence is a component of authoritarian self-adulation.
even the first two minutes are like whaaaaaaat
the nation’s lack of will to defend itself after january sixth was truly astounding

yes, still working on it, criss-crossing memories and confessions, a (fictional) priest that worked with O’Flaherty meets a woman in the French Resistance and an African-American GI, somewhere in late 1944 France
first learned about him earlier this year researching for a play
what unites the rich and the poor is that their talent and work ethic have no relationship with their bank account #ubi
fascinating conversation with Mike Dornbrook about the history of Infocom … including his creation of InvisiClues and the disastrous first meeting between Infocom and Apple

not as in “I believe that stupid goofy video is real” but rather “ah that incriminating evidence is really just genAI dontcha know”
I agree— also in Hannah Arendt’s observation (in a broader sense) genAI seeks to obliterate distinctions between fact and fiction, a “substitution of lies for factual truth” … “the sense by which we take our bearings in the real world,” these will be destroyed. We already see it deployed as a shield
One of the reasons I’m convinced generative AI is a bubble is that the aesthetics of AI art are deeply right-wing coded, and therefore profoundly uncool.
besides BENEATH THE PLANET OF THE APES and DR STRANGELOVE what other movies end with the destruction of the Earth
wish I could find a cast list for the 1961 Hazel Barnes ‘Self Encounter: A Study In Existentialism’ program— the guy playing Zeus in the Sartre play really sends me, got a real Tyrone Guthrie vibe
I am disturbed when I dream of famous people. Is there no respite from celebrity lol [weeps].
