I will not stop pointing out that the emissions cap target for oil sands is slightly below that of the Pathway Alliance's own commitment they made, in print, for emission reductions by 2030 of 22 million tonnes. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Screenshot from the wayback machine capture of the Pathways Alliance press release which states:

PHASE ONE Pathways Alliance advances net zero
emissions plan
October 14, 2022
Significant progress achieved on early-stage work for oil sands carbon capture and storage network CALGARY - Oct. 14, 2022 - The Pathways Alliance, representing Canadas six largest oil sands companies, is advancing early work necessary to build one of the world's largest carbon capture and storage (CCS) facilities in the oil sands
region of northern Alberta. The CCS project is the primary focus of phase one of Pathways Alliance's ambitious plan to reduce annual emissions
from oil sands operations by 22 million tonnes by 2030 and achieve a goal of net-zero emissions by 2050.

Temperatures were warmer than 5°C above the 1981-2010 average in September 2025 across northern Canada and into the Canadian Arctic Archipelago. The southern route of the Northwest Passage was ice-free and open for transit this past melt season.

Regional map of the Canadian Arctic showing September 2025 temperature anomalies. Most areas are warmer than average northeast of Hudson Bay. Anomalies are calculated to a 1981-2010 baseline with red being warmer than average, and blue being colder than average.

On the other hand, Enbridge seems to be acknowledging how carbon pricing is intended to work.

The NDP don't have a strong climate plan. And they were against the fuel levy/rebate. Which only the 20% most wealthy were out of pocket for.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
Oil and gas are 31% of our emissions. The emissions cap would be an indication that he requires reductions in that sector. And of course industry and future governments could still ignore/rescind it. He is counting on CCS - which is costly and questionable in terms of results.

Thank you. Though this is one of the few things you've done that I agree with.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
You are pushing fossil fuels and rolling back climate policy. And Bill C-5 lets you ignore environmental legislation. So I don't believe you.

I was pleasantly surprised that a recent episode of CBC's Ideas "So .... Who wants a pipeline" asked which IPCC scenario / global temperature they were aiming for. Jackie Forrest said 2.6C. I wish all stakeholders, politicians and yes, citizens were asked that question. www.cbc.ca/listen/live-...

I have two local grocers I go to largely for organic / vegetarian / bulk products and they are more expensive including for products that overlap with the 'mainstream' grocers. I'll still buy some of those products there, depending how rich I feel :)

Yes I watched the video. I don't think it actually based on broad analysis - it leaves out many other factors.

I agree, but I also think it is much easier said than done to reduce the cost of food given all of the factors that are causing the price to go up. Including climate change.

Per the article, commitments mean nothing over time. Legislation can be carved out or removed. I've seen absolutely no evidence that the new federal government will put policies in place to meet the previous federal government's commitments.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
Yes, that's more or less what I was pointing out. Carney is supporting fossil fuels as much, possibly more than, clean energy. He is indeed using CCS as a distracting ploy.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
LNG is not clean. The future is mostly wind, solar, storage. Twice as much has been invested in non fossil fuel energy than in fossil fuels in the last year (or several years). Even Carney noted that.

What global temperature are the majority of Canadians aiming for?

AI is being used to improve weather and climate prediction... But not in a make-you-dumber, planet-destroying, chatgpt kinda way.

New vid, ft. my best segue yet, here:

🔥 New fire paper out - Fire regime changes in Canada: an update. Overall, the big-picture trends remain consistent: annual area burned, the annual number and size of large fires are still increasing, but the total number of fires for all sizes continue to decline.

Fire regime changes in Canada: an update
Given the recent rise in extreme fires, we present an update to a previous Canadian wildfire trend analysis (1959-2015) with nine additional years of data (2016-2024), an improved area burned dataset,...

The PM said additional national interest projects will be announced in the coming weeks. This has us thinking about projects that prepare Canada for the future, not set us further apart. What national projects would you like to see funded in Canada?

BTW, Jim Stanford was at the Canadian Senate Finance committee meeting and he also noted that Canada has to do something to reverse that Canadian investment in the US - especially our pension plans.
eileenottawa.bsky.social
I'm not sure how it is a 'smear'. As a Canadian, it was offputting for our PM to be promoting Canadian private investment *into* the US. On top of what we may well pay into US military-industrial complex.
