Don't discount the effect of changes in prose pacing. 19th Century novels typically use much longer and more complicated sentences.

"Pride and Prejudice" and "Sense and Sensibility" went down easy, but starting Emma was like driving into a wall.

In Portland, an ambulance was summoned to the
ICE office to treat an injured protester (not clear
how he was injured). But when the patient was
loaded inside, ICE officers refused to let the
ambulance leave and threatened to shoot the
ambulance driver:

i think about this post every time i watch a movie
tweet that reads:
Lady behind me at The Thing screening last night to her partner "why are they shooting at the dog?" and her partner says very firmly "have you never seen a film before? You watch it and information is revealed"

As a statistician: the premise of this particular critique is absolutely wrong, the NYT's sampling method is not inherently biased.

The best solution I ever saw to the problem of the ending of Shrew was from director Arin Arbus. In an early scene, Katherine stomped on Petruchio's hand, hard, and he went through the rest of the play in a bloody bandage. Then her offer at the end read as admission, not submission.

I understand how that might motivate individuals, but that doesn't explain why someone thought that it would bring *military* or *political* advantage.

Biometric programmer here: this article is ridiculous. Biometric data is not the same thing as PII, even if the whole database were stolen it has no value. It's less worrisome than an ordinary photo ID.

I have not seen a single good answer to "Why take hostages at all, and without asking a ransom?"

It looks like Hamas wagered the lives of the Gazans that Hezbollah, the West Bank, and Iran would all attack Israel in solidarity. How was the taking of Hostages supposed to advance that goal?

Are "reading series" only a thing outside of NYC? The ones I know (Red Bull and CSC) seem to be extras/fundraisers between full productions.

David Simon, creator of ‘The Wire’, being interviewed by Ari Shapiro (NPR)
SHAPIRO: OK, so you've spent your career creating television without Al, and I could imagine today you thinking, boy, I wish I had had that tool to solve those thorny problems...
SIMON: What?
SHAPIRO: ...Or saying...
SIMON: You imagine that?
SHAPIRO: ...Boy, if that had existed, it would have screwed me over.
SIMON: I don't think Al can remotely challenge what writers do at a fundamentally creative level.
SHAPIRO: But if you're trying to transition from scene five to scene six, and you're stuck with that transition, you could imagine plugging that portion of the script into an Al and say, give me 10 ideas for how to transition this.
SIMON: I'd rather put a gun in my mouth.

Both problems are important.

Against a trained opponent you are more likely to lose the battle; against an untrained opponent you are more likely to lose your life.

I've been saying for years that 2nd Amendment absolutists really do believe that the sacrifice of innocents is necessary to keep the world from collapsing; this was also the view of the ancient Aztecs and Carthaginians, both of whom practiced ritual human sacrifice.

It's tempting to treat "the American right is a death cult" as rhetorical hyperbole, but when you look at e.g. their enthusiasm for executing people who are *clearly* innocent, no actually these people really do just worship and revel in death and murder

Winner-take-all elections *always* decay into a two party system, where one is rewarded by being either indistinguishable or extreme. And, of course, gerrymandering.
