In the next few days, I will be sharing some of our work that I am most proud of from my time at NOAA/GFDL. But I would also like a little normalcy today on my feed, so here's my go-to sea ice data viz update.

#Arctic sea ice extent still remains the *lowest* on record for the date (JAXA). Not good

For years, Curtis Bay residents complained about black dust coating their community. I did 2 summer NSF REU chemistry programs in college — one in Rochester, NY and one in Graz, Austria.

I learned SO much about science, research, and life in these programs.

The NSF REU program is immeasurably valuable, and every generation of young scholars should have this option for summer work.
🚨 Many NSF-funded Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) are being cancelled for Summer 2025.

The idea of renaming "Greenland" to "Red, White and Blueland" must have come from our 2020 Science paper where we (Ben Smith and 14 others) used NASA's ICESat and ICESat-2 laser altimetry to show how much the ice sheet surface went up or down in 16 years.

I think some people hear “grants” and think that without them, scientists and government workers just have less stuff to play with at work. But grants fund salaries for students, academics, researchers, and people who work in all areas of public service.

“Pausing” grants means people don’t eat.

This is insane. There are lots of scientists in the US who are on “soft money”, which means that without government grants, they’re out of jobs. This is how you destroy the best research and development in the world.
