Blimey. There's suddenly a LOT more people here. Hello! For those who weren't on the bird site and don't already know, amongst other things, I write stuff, and with Christmas coming up, maybe a joyful book about orchids, or one about hummingbirds, might be a colourful antidote to winter and Now?
Ophrys lucis, your 'orchid of light' on Rhodes.

I enjoyed shedding some light myself today. Remember the time a competitor who boasts of his conservation credentials lobbied BSBI to refuse charitable donations from my wildlife tour company?

I do. It's an illuminating tale.

It's such an honour to have the brilliant orchid-hunter @thenewgalaxy.bsky.social as part of Team Mariposa. We're having a great day here at @bsbibotany.bsky.social conference - meeting friends old and new, sharing stories, making plans.
Discussing the Ghost #Orchid and its current status in the British Isles at the @bsbibotany.bsky.social Botanical Conference 2025, handily been put next to the @mariposanature.bsky.social stand so I can talk about our tours too, where you can come and see Ghost #Orchids in the wild if you want to!

It's #FrohawkFriday, the day we celebrate the butterfly studies & artwork of FW Frohawk.

Today features Silver-studded Blue & Brown Argus. The latter remains fairly widespread in England, but Silver-studded Blue has declined steadily, losing much of its preferred heathland habitat.

The emperor has no clothes! Very much looking forward to sharing true stories about the little man of Rhodes - and other orchid tales - with @bsbibotany.bsky.social conference attendees this weekend. See you there.

Fire in the sky looking southeast from my #Shetland home this morning. Famously a warning for someone.

The gates of hell* opened fully in Rhodes last year when we found Cerberus - a unique Ophrys reinholdii with three labella fused on one flower.

*insofar as we had to name this orchid after the three-headed canine guardian of the underworld in Greek mythology. We were in orchid heaven!

It's #FrohawkFriday, the day we celebrate the butterfly studies & artwork of FW Frohawk.

Today features Long-tailed & Short-tailed Blue, both great British rarities in Frohawk's day. The latter still is, but Long-tailed Blue now seems to arrive annually in southern England in very small numbers.

June 2017, orchid-hunting as always, but above all blessed to be at Hampden Park on 24 June. The Stone Roses were the soundtrack to so many of my days in the field.
