Where I live, there are enforced rules about what colour you can paint your house and about a kid wanting an Insta account but my neighbour could own multiple rifles.
As I understand it, legal gun ownership requires a licencee to demonstrate a "genuine reason" for such ownership. But a 50'ish suburban man can have 6?!!
The 50-year-old Bondi beach terror suspect who died was a licensed firearms holder, and had six firearms, NSW police say. Police have the six firearms from the scene yesterday. His 24yo son is in police custody in hospital in a critical but stable condition.

There is no justification for owning a gun.

1. In the immediate aftermath, news outlets will get it wrong.
2. Don't trust anonymous sources.
3. Don't trust stories that cite another news outlet as the source of the information.
4. There's almost never a second shooter.
5. Pay attention to the language the media uses.
• "We are getting reports".
". could mean anything.
• "We are seeking confirmation".. means they don't have it.
• "[News outlet] has learned". means it has a scoop or is going out on limb.
6. Look for news outlets close to the incident.
7. Compare multiple sources.
8. Big news brings out the fakers. And photoshoppers.
9. Beware reflexive retweeting. Some of this is on you.

More on the destruction of MqUni Arts. Every PoC in Sociology has been sacked or pushed into teaching only. Only 1 woman left in Politics & Intl Relations, & 1 in Sociology. At least 3/9 sacked academics are neurodiverse. Several successful researchers have been sacked or made teaching only. 2/2
