Did people really memorize phone numbers before cell phones, or is that just a movie thing?

I was watching some old shows from the 90s and noticed people would just dial numbers from memory - like they'd call their friends or family without looking anything up.
Made me wonder if that was actually normal back then? Did people genuinely have all their important numbers memorized, or did most folks keep a little address book or written list nearby?

The apartment complex doesnt care about that kind of stuff. They never put up my porch light and there is just a wire hanging in the middle of my porch ceiling. That it rains on.

I am looking for a way to build out the doors so i can fit a bar across correctly. Or a way to make the doors open out without it being obvious so that the closet is functional. I dont have a ton of closet space.

To make it worse they hung the left door too low and to open the door i have to lift it. With both hands. They also put it upside down.
