As I walk through this wicked world
Searchin' for light in the darkness of insanity
I ask myself, "Is all hope lost?
Is there only pain and hatred and misery?"
And each time I feel like this inside
There's one thing I wanna know
What's so funny 'bout peace, love and understanding?

Anyway, it makes me sad. And confused. And I just want it to stop.

Stuff can be recreated. I can sit here instead of there. We can share. But people? There’s no way to remake someone. No recreating their experiences and their DNA and their uniqueness.

So I don’t get it. What allows you to do that to another person? You’re no better or worse than they are.

It was a threat. Touch my stuff and I’ll kill you. And I was sad. And confused. It’s just stuff, man. Why would you kill someone over stuff? A person is worth way more than that. The same goes for land. It’s just stuff. All this mine and yours and us and not us? Fuck. We’re just people.

Years ago, I saw a car with a bumper sticker reading “Nothing in this car is worth your life.”

When I read it, I felt good for a moment. My first thought was that the owner was saying that nothing they owned was worth taking a life for. That it was a statement of peace.

Then I realized.

I just don’t get it. If someone told me to hurt people like that, I couldn’t. Maybe in active self-defense, but maybe not. And certainly not in any other circumstance that I can think of. I’m just not wired that way, to feel like I have the right to do that. And over what? A border, a law, a thing?

One of the things I struggle with the most in this world is that I fundamentally do not understand how people commit acts of violence on each other. I just can’t understand what makes an ICE agent think it’s okay to treat people that way. Or for an Israeli soldier. Or a Russian soldier.

Old enough to remember when scenes like this would have been unthinkable in America. (It was 9 months ago)

We are the strongest people ever! That inflatable frog is the scariest thing, please don’t let it hurt me.

This, btw, is why I oppose the death penalty. Someone (generally many someones, including judge, jury, guards, etc.) have to knowingly and calmly collaborate to take the life of another person. It harms those ppl—who go on to interact with the rest of society & the violence spirals out from there.

6. There is no such thing as free violence. All violence harms the wielder.

Every time someone tries to sell you on the idea that there is something we can do, without cost, that harms other people, realize that they are lying to you.

Every story ever told exists in a grand tapestry that stretches back to the earliest humans telling stories about their hunts and the stars as well as forward into an unknown future, tying all humans together in a work that illustrates who and what we are.

Story is the most human of the arts.

Spent an hour on and off with Spotify online support just trying to find out where to file feedback re: ICE ads. After asking what the feedback was, all four reps ended the chat immediately when I mentioned ICE. This has to be direction from above. Save your time and just cancel now.

This is because the feds won't stop gassing our neighborhoods so they can flee and, by extension, are also repeatedly gassing the cops. What a moment to be alive

There was a class-action suit in the US for some kind of privacy violation. Anyone who was eligible (US resident with an account during certain dates) could join, and we all got the same payment (I think).

I am being asked to tell my department which pieces of lab equipment should be supported with backup power because they expect rolling blackouts and brownouts in 2026 due to increased energy demands from AI. In case you're wondering how my day is going.

We got $34.48 from Facebook today as part of a settlement. What should Zuck buy us?

I do not understand why more people are not horrified by this. It's a profound violation of a person who is incapable of providing consent, and if they can do it to her, they can do it to you. Do we want people making videos of something that looks like us doing anything they want it to?

It reduces people to nothing more than the way they look and the basic way their voice sounds. It doesn't include the million things we all do as we inhabit our bodies - the things that make us different than anyone else.

Just so everyone is clear, the main issue in the Supreme Court voting rights case tomorrow is whether it's racist against white people to enforce the Voting Rights Act.

I'm dead serious. We live in incredibly stupid times.

August 2026. Massive heatwaves kill 1000s of Americans, mostly low-income and elderly, because as a society we decided it was more important to be able to create pervy deepfake videos of the girl next door than to power air conditioners.
