"For now, Baraa’s dreams of higher education are on hold — all universities in the Gaza Strip have been heavily damaged or destroyed, part of a broader pattern that human rights experts call “scholasticide” — and it’s a daily struggle to obtain basic necessities." 📍

A third infant in Kentucky has died of whooping cough this year.

Reminder: The best way to protect against whooping cough is to get vaccinated. Adults should get a Tdap booster every 10 years, so please check, you may be overdue!

NEW: AI “recipe slop” is overrunning search and social. Food creators say Google’s AI Overviews and glossy fake food pics are drowning out real, tested recipes — collapsing traffic and setting home cooks up for disaster, especially this Thanksgiving.

Don't have a kid if you won't vaccinate them against diseases that will kill them with horrible suffering in infancy. I bet these people whose babies are dying of whooping cough in 2025 are pro-life too.

Trump: "Despite their size, Secretary Kennedy has formally certified that these are the first ever MAHA turkeys. They could be fat, but they're still MAHA. They've been fattened on a steady diet of grass, beef, to allow the smoothies and all the other things they have been eating for this occasion."

The first half of my grad students took their oral exams today. Their responses were thoughtful and even though they were nervous, it was clear they leaned in to the readings this semester. Contemporary Theory is an interesting course to teach.

"In this fascinating conversation on knowledge and value, gender and care, Babalwa celebrates her grandmother – “a learning space, a space of imagination” – who provided her with “ways of knowing” that remain sidelined in academia."
How have maternal ways of knowing been sidelined and devalued? What’s the harm in sociology’s fixation on its “founding fathers”? And why must we de-gender motherhood and see how all of us must care? Babalwa Magoqwana joins us from South Africa.

Highly recommend making time to read "A plea for promiscuous creativity".
