There's a super fun story about these spurless Columbines! Pollinators mainly visit flowers for nectar, but these nectarless populations were very stable, and this study found both molecular & biological basis for these supposedly disadvantageous forms. 🧪

It listed the authors with Zachary Cabin as the first and Scott A. Hodges as last. In brief it says :"Cabin et al. present a case of natural selection in action. They show thatafloral homeotic mutant of Aquilegia is under strong positive selection primarily due to reduced floral herbivory. Loss-offunction alleles at APETALA3-3 underlie the phenotype and molecular signatures at the locus indicate a soft sweep and assortative mating by morphology."
