Thomas pressed a hand against her forehead. She grabbed his wrist, digging in with her fingernails. He didn’t flinch. A sharp, lancing pain shot through her skull as the whole world was abruptly thrown into sharper focus. Penny bucked, kneeing him in the ribs as layers of spellwork peeled away. There was a sudden, terrifying, nauseating awareness of her brain as a collection of cells, a folded, fatty mass. The NDA had nestled in every crevice of cerebrum and cerebellum, and the Dragon of Loss tore it all away with the energy of a man rip-starting a chainsaw.
The clarity was so pure and so painful she almost came.

Thomas laughed. “Your magic court does trial by combat, doesn’t it?” He asked. “Two of us fight, one gets a lethal wound… we take out the whole pack of ‘em in one go. Distraction and weapon all in one tidy package.”
“I have people I care about in this city,” Niamh snapped. “I’m not suiciding for this.”
Thomas shrugged. “Suit yourself. Detonating is a perfectly reasonable solution, in my experience. These bodies start to go to shit once you hit 40. Shuck ‘em off, start again.”

Kimmy goes on an adventure with Joey! (adventures are fun right up until theyre horrible)

Whatever negotiations Joey thought they were going to get into were not going well. The captain didn’t seem to acknowledge the gun at his head and spat on the deck next to Joey’s feet. “How about you go fuck yourself.”
“For real?” Joey’s drawl was more bored than surprised. The whole scenario seemed small and unimportant to him. He’d done things like this before. Kimmy was surprised at the envy she felt. Niamh had always been so careful, there was a whole life out here that Kimmy could be living. More dangerous, sure, but… maybe that’s okay. Maybe that’s better than stagnation.
Instead of answering the man dodged to the side, making a bold and probably suicidal grab for Joey’s gun. Kimmy steeled herself to see death.

Niamh made to put her hand on her forehead, then thought the better of wiping blood through her hair and rested her wrist there instead. It took her a minute to gather her thoughts and form them into words that might make sense to anyone else. “The big pattern just says secrets revealed, but that’s not necessarily us,” she said. She gestured at the tear she’d pointed out before. “That says it is us. Not just dragons in general, but you and me in particular.”
“And the blood?”
She grimaced. “Sorry about that. It’s a high drama sort of specialty, prophecy.”

Man I feel you. I get touched-out so easily and I have two extremely cuddly kids and by the end of every day I want to peel off my skin. There isnt a solution other than "have someone else do the work for a while," and lol, lmao, there isnt anyone else.

Cassius’s eyes were bright with rage. The corded muscles inside his shoulders tensed and flexed, his hands grasping in little spasms.
“Boy,” he rasped. His fangs were fully extended now, causing the unattractive lisp that afflicted so many blood-drinkers. “Demon-ridden. Free me. I don’t care what lies this whelp has told you. Free me. Free me and I’ll owe you a thousand debts. You and your master.”

Sebastian considered the shadow. Its presence in the web was light, drifting, and difficult to discern. He couldn’t quite get ahold of it to determine what it wanted. So he just asked, “What does that oath mean to you?”
The shadows grew deeper, the skull growing more defined. Its jaw never moved as is answered. Caution is wisdom. I am bound to Joey and he is bound to me. To break a promise sworn on this bond damages its integrity, ultimately damaging my capacity for action on this plane.”

“Very good,” Sebastian said, clapping his gloved hands. “Very dramatic, very storybook vampire. You’re flawless, darling.”
Her smile faded as he approached, shooing her out from behind his desk like she was a naughty pet rather than the sleek and powerful murder machine he knew her to be. He felt her resistance in the web and pushed ennui at her. Fatalism. Boredom. It’s his office, let him have this one.
It wasn’t quite mind control, it was subtler than that. Vampires didn’t really have emotions the way humans did. They were corpses. Their adrenal glands were as dead and cold as the rest of them. So Sebastian had to work in a conceptual, meta-emotional space. It required a light touch, delicate, focused, insidious. Remind her that she has all the time in the world, remind her that she’s the older and more established vampire. Remind her that she’s too old for this shit.

“I can be huge,” Thomas said.
“I know you can, sweetie.” Kimmy put her phone back in her pocket like she was sheathing a sword. “Trix is at the shop. I’m going to let them in and start work. We good here?”
Evidently they were. Thomas shook hands with Niamh on the way out.
“We’ll find them,” he said.
She took a deep breath. “I know. I hope they remember me when we do.”
