3rd wave open source, vipassana, chai, fixies, other stuff.
i'd somehow managed to forget this happened but turning it into a heritage moment is too perfect. we need a whole collection of these.

if, like me, you can't shake your coffee addiction, i highly recommend shaking it up instead. try adding oat milk so you can enjoy both the appearance of mud and the flavour of mud.

It is both true that:

1️⃣ nationally, data centers use way less water than golf courses
2️⃣ locally, if your watershed and supply are extremely constrained (or as here, horribly mismanaged) dropping a data center into the mix may tip you and your neighbors into a very bad situation

remote pairing on a new (to me) codebase with a friend in india means if i finish my workday at exactly 17:30 he finishes at... 3:00am.

it works. but we need a better system.

i haven't used my mac in earnest for nearly a year. (i only use it for volunteering.) had completely forgotten that emacs somehow exploded on it.

i don't want to switch laptops just for emacs, so i'm now down the `emerge world` rabbithole that is updating brew.

when did mac become gentoo and why

wat. tricky's female vocalist pair on blowback was... cyndi lauper? how did i not know that?

also, how did i not know that the backing drum loop from black steel is an a.r. rahman track?

i was missing a lot listening to these albums as a kid.

fastmail releases desktop apps. click the link, it says "download for linux (flathub)", click that link, click install, bazaar opens, wham bam... fastmail on linux.

thank you bart for flathub and thank you adam for bazaar. i love this future. (now if fastmail were only f/oss itself.)

i spoke to @purpleidea.bsky.social about mgmt yesterday and i've gotta say, as a not-sre (so grain of salt), it's really compelling:

as someone who has to build for ios (volunteer project, platform not my decision) wow do i hear this
kenney.nl Kenney @kenney.nl · Oct 13
Support for macOS is ending for Asset Forge, 2.5.2 is unfortunately the final release. Supporting that specific platform slows down all my other projects and progress in general. None of my new products will release for macOS or other Apple devices, it's simply not worth it.

#localfirst doesn't have to be about collaboration.

you can 100% have a #lofi app that stores data on your laptop, desktop, and phone without ever engaging a second human being.

multiplayer is cool — but you don't have to solve the hardest problems first.

the new shower setup at the cabin is obnoxiously loud but it's a small price to pay to actually shower once or twice a week. de-luxe.

or... it would be. if this drought wasn't keeping the well completely dry. :/

any time i pass a car parked in the bicycle lane, i'm careful to knock loudly on the body of the vehicle with my knuckles. i find your average motorist is very receptive to this. they appreciate being alerted to their error.

if concerned about your fingers, use a large metal object instead.

35 years on, we have decided to reinvent corba but in typescript this time:

somehow, i don't hate it? i kinda wish they'd gone with standard-ish rich types for json... a minor complaint if you don't touch internals:

Cap'n Web is a new open source, JavaScript-native RPC protocol for use in browsers and web servers. It provides the expressive power of Cap'n Proto, but with no schemas and no boilerplate.
