The one thing the government can do to increase growth is the one thing they won't do... but putting taxes up after explicitly promising not to is A-OK.

The war will end when Russia stops fighting. Therefore, pressure has to be put on Russia, so that they stop believing that they will win. Why is that so hard to understand?

Here's something else government can do to remove delays - cut the time charging decisions take. I had simple sexual assault case. One complainant, one incident between flatmates, no witnesses. Took 3 years to make a decision to charge.

Today the news will be about the government's proposals for juries.

Please read this thread so as to be informed about the actual practical problems in the criminal justice system - problems which will not be solved by this misconceived and illiberal tinkering.
Here is a list of reasons why some of my hearings and trials this year have been delayed and kicked off into the long grass, stuck in our record court backlog. Serious allegations which will now be tried *years* after the event. 🧵👇

As you say, juries really aren't the primary driver of delays. Here are just a few:

On the topic of cutting jury trials, can we please give them a proper name? Calling them "Swift Courts" as Lammy did in Parliament sets entirely the wrong tone. Like CJSSS where everyone forgot about the Justice and got hung up on the Speedy bit.

I'd prefer they were called Lammy Courts than Swift!

"How can you defend them when you know they're guilty?!"

Without fail - every time I explain the fallacy at the heart of that question - people go "Oh yeah that makes sense"

Yeah if you'd thought about it for 7 seconds before blurting it out the answer is really logical.
What’s the worst question someone can ask after you tell them your profession? For linguists, it’s definitely “how many languages do you speak?”, but I’m curious what else is happening to the rest of y’all out there?!

Just been reminded that on this day in 1990 I landed in Kuwait.

Was immediately detached to scout and recon to add comms and linguistics support. When somebody asked why we needed linguistics, the XO said "because you win wars by making friends, not by making corpses. Safeties on, gentleman".

So many policy debates would be better understood (I’m not saying they would necessarily have better outcomes) if we used percentage figures. Tesco’s pre-tax profit of 4.5 per cent, for example.
I think there might be a case for retiring millions and billions from our vocabulary entirely, and expressing public spending as multiples of a house price.

"The government today committed to spending three streets of terraced housing in Middlesbrough on the NHS to cut waiting lists."

Either way, expect prosecutions in the future.

Do I really know a third of the people who got it early, directly? Or is this an undercount?
