The basics of what's happening inside your smartphone today were well-known way before even a room-sized calculator was possible.

I don't do much freelance anymore, but sharing recent lettering for #portfolioday because I'd love to do more of it.

custom wordmarks for websites, books, comics, bands, games, events… a good alternative to simply picking a typeface. all hand-drawn, starting with ink and paper.

Worthwhile use cases seem to center around quick prototyping and experiments, but those aren't multi-trillion dollar markets. And use cases beyond those require a foundation less brittle and more extensible than generative tools seem capable of.

Such a narrow slice can't support the degree of hype.

Replacing a click-and-drag GUIs with a text-based magic 8-ball isn't a preferable interaction model for most users.

Non-coders will still get better, more predictable results with Squarespace or equivalent, and most pros already have more deterministic ways to automate the boilerplate they need.

RoR is ultimately the final boss of hype.

I think generative code and design tools are best understood an extension of no/low-code WYSIWYG tools that have existed from FrontPage to Wix, but with an inferior user interface.

I think this is a really great point. I’ve had *moments* with Cursor where it’s been 10x faster than what I’d have done by hand, and those moments are super memorable. But most of the time, my experience is a lot more mixed.

In case people need something to look forward to, I have the honour of collaborating with @hookland.bsky.social on a light novel. Initial discussions began in a necropolis and then moved onto a pub. Will begin in earnest early 2026.
