most folks couldn't get past worrying about how straight their lines were, getting hung up on the drawing *looking* like an image of an app vs conveying a concept.

I think without the muscle memory from learning that way, analog methods may be mostly lost to time, but it can be incredibly freeing.

as a director kicking off a new website or app feature, I used to try bringing my teams (of younger "ux/ui" designers) into a room with nothing but a box of sharpies and a handful of 11x17 printer paper, to ideate quickly without being overly precious or precise about form.

my dad wasn't a visual artist, but I have so many childhood memories of him grabbing a pen and random scraps of paper to answer my questions about how things work.

multiplication. binary/computer memory. the vacuum tubes in his guitar amp. the rules of american football (these still elude me…)

relatedly. I think an unfortunate impact of digital tools is the reduction of the concept of "drawing" to a mode of art making, instead of a means of visual iterative problem solving.

the (high) fidelity of digital design tools is often counterproductive to exploring new ideas.
German company Leuchtturm has a fantasic slogan:

“Denken mit der Hand” — thinking with your hand.

I do most design work by hand and rarely touch Figma.

The flow is so much better.

Figma makes you think about implementation righ away, which limits yo creativity.

Grab a pen. Build later.

this video by my typography teacher shows the type of work our undergrad classes had us doing.

even in the early 2000s, the first 2 years of the graphic design program were all ink, paper, glue and tape. no computers.

I believe the southern hemisphere should see it flipped 🤔

good catch, I actually flipped this so the angle of the roof worked better in a different context
