Part of the reason many Germans supported the Nazis was that there really was a lot of violence in the streets & they wanted order. But much of that violence was carried out by the Nazi paramilitary SA.

My take is that if you’re of a certain age & used messageboards or an IM (eg Messenger) in your nascent internet days, you’re less likely to become a bigot/anti-vaxxer/conspiracist/nutjob as a result of social media than those whose first exposure to online interaction was Facebook or even Twitter.
Interesting piece. Yet again I’m struck by the disconnect between people who stick exclusively to their friends/following feeds (as I do) and those who click on trending topics, use discover tabs, etc. On here, as on Twitter, the dreaded algorithms have little to no effect on my experience.

Wow. I had absolutely no knowledge of this until now. I can’t decide if it’s great or terrible. I love the extended portentous opening … then into a cheesy synth rendition of the main melody.
I think it’s because people initially complained that the laugh track was too loud, so the producers wanted to make it clear the laughter was a real human audience, not dubbed on from stock.
Each autumn, I find myself mourning the preceding summer a little more and staring down the barrel of the approaching winter with deeper dread. I never used to wonder if I’d make it through to another spring; now the uncertainty plagues me.
Don’t be scared of this pathetic boy, even though he is commander in chief of the biggest military force in the world and has the untrammelled power to incinerate the entire planet on a whim.
