Yesterday the European Union decided to permanently stop gas imports from Russia and to phase out Russian oil. At the same time, Norwegian politicians pulled an all nighter to finish next year’s budget. Now we know that the demands for a phase out of Norwegian oil and gas production were firmly rejected during the negotiations. That’s reassuring. We have a broad political consensus that Norway should continue to be a reliable energy partner to Europe. Reducing Norwegian production now would be a strategic mistake. Nor would it do the climate much good. In year 2000, Norway produced an impressive 3,4 million barrels of oil per day. Today production is around 2 million barrels per day. That’s a fall of 40%. What happened to the world’s oil demand during those 25 years? Well, in 2000 it was 73 million barrels / day. And this year it will be around 106 million barrels / day. So it grew by 45%. I’m not an expert, but this suggest to me there are other factors than the level of Norwegian supply that determine the world’s demand for oil. Oil demand will hopefully fall, as we make progress in the energy transition. We should consume less. And I can guarantee one thing to those who want us to go out of business. If demand falls, so will production. Unfortunately it doesn’t work quite as well the other way round.
