PSA for any Apub authors whose books are in the Anthropic settlement list: Amazon is not participating in the settlement, since they have an investment in Anthropic. When you submit your claim form, you DO NOT have to list Amazon as an add'l rightsholder, & can claim 100% of settlement money.

Did you read my post from last week about how contract woes caused me to withdraw an accepted story from F&SF, ending my 54-year quest to be published in that magazine? But wait (as the saying goes) — there's more! Scroll down at the link for an update. www.scottedelman.com/wordpress/20...

I have been reliably informed I will be baking a pie and making mashed potatoes and rutabagas for the final Thursday of this month. No data yet available on gravy.

There are worse fates.

This week on Adventures with Brain Fog: Our intrepid heroine gets so caught up in making sure she buys the right style of planner she ends up buying the wrong year.

(Returned and correct one purchased but why are 2025 planners even still available in November of 2025?)

I gobbled up the Ramona books as a child. It was the first time I saw a kid like myself - creative, strange, prone to chaos - in fiction. Best of all, my struggling reader self could read them all on her own. They helped me become both a reader and a writer.
performative reading, lack of reading skills, nobody's reading anymore -- NO!

tell me about a book that changed you

for me? the *extremely* ahistorical novel, THE AGONY AND THE ECSTASY which I read at 13 and was like, "Oh, art can be *everything* to a maker, for good and bad"

Do something where success is obvious and visible - cleaning, knitting, drawing, etc . . .

Write something just for fun - like fanfic

In really tough times I dive into my "damned with faint praise" file to read the nice things editors who didn't publish my work said.

This week in ways journals annoy me -

Saying "No simultaneous subs" followed by "will not respond to rejections" and not giving a timeline as to when to stop expecting a response so my piece is infinitely caught in your slush pile.

No thanks.

I really hope my Disabled characters help other Disabled folks feel less alone and, possibly, better process their experiences. I strongly believe having context for my own experiences would have helped me better process/handle situations when I was younger.

Results of my week "off" writing:

Lots of cleaning/tidying, one and a half audio books listened to, lots of resting, slightly better meals, some baking, one phone call put off for weeks finally made.

Also, 1500 words of something that might be my next short story.

Yes! Reading for pleasure should be pleasurable. Abandon books, listen to audio books, read only graphic novels, reread books til you have to buy another copy. Whatever works for you.

Description.

Sometimes I reread my descriptions and realize they're just stage directions or really purple prose.

Also, making my characters motivations clear without literally telling the reader what they are.
