Realized I hadn’t posted this on Bluesky. I’m not an authoritative source but here is a map I created of modern architecture in the LA area (so far ~1,700 points from many sources). I’ve added perimeters for the current fires to get a sense of what might be impacted: www.google.com/maps/d/edit?...

Just came across a coyote trotting up the sidewalk while walking my dog and it reminded me that I saw one recently in downtown in front of the music center. Pretty soon they are just going to be like squirrels here in LA.

I was just touring Spokane on Google earth and I don’t think I knew it has some really great large-ish turn of the century buildings. The city went from 350 people in 1880 to almost 20,000 in 1890! LA was a significantly bigger city but so little from that era survives, especially big stuff.

"But the issue isn’t that we need more 'boy-friendly' reforms. It’s that boys are still socialized to compete only with boys and to read girls’ success as illegitimate or emasculating. The result is dissonance, resentment, and disengagement for boys—and hostile climates for girls."

I think this is the best way to put my thoughts on AI: I see it like cars — on it’s own on a closed track it’s cool and fun and awesome; let it loose in US society, though, and it becomes the Great Satan.
I believe that AI has valid ethical use cases that are actually pretty interesting. Human nature being what it is, they are outnumbered by the unethical ones — as with guns and crypto. But I think it’s *possible* with the right regulations to make AI net-positive, unlike with guns and crypto.

Just saw my first LA owl! (I’d seen owls before in other places but never one here). A great big white one.

IMO the best-ever western film theme is a tie between Silverado (1985) and A Bug’s Life (1998)

In 1980, 40% of all Angelenos (city of LA) lived in a owner-occupied detached single family house. A decade later in 1990 it was down to 35%. But by 2000 it only ticked down a percentage point to 34%. Today (2023 data) it’s 33%, meaning it basically hasn’t budged significantly since the 90s..

I’m starting to feel like the country’s depraved elite are pivoting from cover-up to accelerationism.

I literally think about this every day
man we need a way to say "the moral rot and depravity of this country's elite must be burned out of it with cleansing fire" that isn't wildly reactionary-coded

"Fuck moving forward. Screw coming together. We are going to hire a team of prosecutors so large it needs its own building, fund them so well they have their own helicopters, and instruct them to go after everyone who broke the law from the White House to individual ICE agents."
i’ve said this before and i remain convinced it’s true, the 2028 platform that would deliver obama 08 results is “i am gonna
bring the hammer down on the corrupt self-dealing politicians and their rich friends and there are no sacred cows id give a pass”
