Well, there’s less nazis here for one thing
This sort of shot used to be less of a big deal, but, it’s pretty impressive:

One of the fascinating thing about PEE WEE’S BIG ADVENTURE now is that - though it announced Tim Burton - it’s way more Paul Reuben’s movie. Burton’s at, like, 20% (BOTTLE ROCKET is similar) where he’s partly muted because he has a limited budget but also because he has to prove things cut together.

NW: the only Phil Hartman film in the Criterion Collection.

Per Oscars, HAMNET may lose because giving more wins to Chloe Zhao in this short a period feels like an anointing. Buckley likely the best actress, but pic/director could swing PTA or Coogler, who seem poised for screenwriting wins. Moura, Del Toro, and Madigan my other favorites at the moment.

I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t have at least one actor they just don’t like.

Unexpectedly get to play catch up with recent purchases, so NW: ENTER THE NINJA, which is either great stage direction, or… HUH HUH… HUH HUH… HUH HUH.

CAUGHT STEALING: I love Aronofsky’s pretentious wide swing films (MOTHER!, THE FOUNTAIN). He said he was trying to have fun with this one. He doesn’t know fun, man could ruin a knock knock joke. Third act picks up, but tone and motivation sucks.

One of the things about awards seasons is that there’s always performers who are obviously the reliable fifth nominee. Like, nothing against Felicity Jones in THE BRUTALIST, or Michelle Williams in THE FABLEMANS, or Bill Nighy in LIVING, etc.

Thinking on READY OR NOT, and often the difference between an action or western movie and a horror movie is if the lead’s a man or a woman.

i think the inability to tell the difference between "i don't like it" and "i don't like it so i have to figure out a way to imply this thing i don't like is morally evil" is the most fundie thing i see people who are aren't technically fundie regularly do these days

I like READY OR NOT. It functioned as a horror comedy because - even if the hand was tipped - the protagonist could’ve died. I hope the sequel leans into being more of a comedic action movie because you can’t flippantly kill the og lead - audiences will hate that - so it’s not load bearing.

I’m agnostic/ambivalent about the rise of people watching things with subs on. I would be more into it if it boosted people’s vocabulary. Unfortunately the only new word it’s taught people is squelching.

THE TOXIC AVENGER (25): It’s hard to get movies made these days and I was willing to do some of the heavy lifting, and it’s very Troma in that way where it needs even more than that. I liked the violence, I guess, the mop deaths were fun. I don’t dislike it.

I hate Spotify lists. And they often come from people who also say “Fuck AI” and they’re the exact same problem. All modern bullshit convenience is the same thing. And yes, that also includes social media, it’s just that some of it has more practical uses. But we’re helping destroy the middle class.

People defending Paul Dano: Have you seen THERE WILL BE BLOOD? Cause, Tarantino? He has a point.

The reason why LA traffic going insane with running yellows at top speed obsesses me is because there was just an accident where two cars crashed because of it and it sent one into The Oaks, which is where I was standing about five minutes before.

One of the things about Tarantino is he’s always been a provocateur. For a lot of people that is more engaging in their twenties and high school years than middle age because by then they have conformed and he hasn’t.

I feel like now that they’re available on 4K and streaming people talk less about THE ABYSS and TRUE LIES. Perhaps waiting for things is good and constant instant gratification is bad? I dunno. (I do, it’s bad)

I see a lot of lose/loose typos, probably the most normie word mix up. But when sometimes types “loose their shit” I picture a general saying “on my command” and - like - bomb bay doors opening.

My thought whenever people complain about Tarantino’s comments on movies:

As we’re in December my sense is that ONE BATTLE is probably too “Otto’s jacket” for best picture. Best chances are screenplay, Del Toro and maybe Chase Infiniti, with director a possible. Penn and DiCaprio are previous winners so the nom would be the win, Del Toro has one but it’s been a while.

It is so wild how bad Hollywood has become about synergy and overexposure. There’s no way a star would have two movies coming out within three months of each other unless one was severely delayed. Whereas now, Amanda Seyfried has a movie coming out on 12/19 and another one six days later.
