Found a glowing thing in the sunshine while I walked and waited for a friend this afternoon

some type of seagrass, I think? the grass strands are skinny and variegated green red, and arching above, glowing in the sunlight are fuzzy looking red pink cat tails - the thing made me feel like I was at the seas side in the middle of a city

thankfully I usually enjoy what I cook (by which I mean it usually turns out!) enough to have it a day or two (or even three) - this recipe is 'feeds 4' so it's likely to be dinner for me and my other person at LEAST two nights, and maybe packed lunch another day

oooh, good plan for next time! (I admit I made this recipe today primarily because for once I already possessed EVERY SINGLE INGREDIENT in my kitchen (today's thighs were in the freezer already, and had the bones, so....)

Not long after my kid was born, we were harassed by a creep at a bus stop who followed me onto the bus

I will never forget how an entire bus load of Chicagoans spontaneously took on the tasks of surrounding him, making sure I was okay, and ensuring he got off at the next stop

agree that short cuts are a wonder, but then I feel I've wasted a ton of spice or herb, too, because I'm just - not going to use a jar full by the time it should really go out, you know? the whole clove or root lasts so much longer until needed......(mostly cooking for two or more, too)

I mean, hell: assembling the tools and the spices, much less prepping the spices, is already going to take the 20 minutes prep time you allotted!

Here's what I always want to tell the people writing the NYTimes recipes: I am my own, non-professional sous chef, and the prep is going to take at LEAST three times what you think it will. Peel garlic, put in freezer. Peel the piece of ginger. Now use a good grater to grate the ginger....etc, etc

As I read this, I keep thinking over and over again about the two major groups I see in politics and policy spaces: folks who take opinion polls as gospel and folks who see them as indicators of what people believe at the moment that can be *shaped* into something else.

we’ll see how his mayoral tenure shakes out but i am convinced that Mamdani has the juice. not just the charisma to win an election but the temperament to govern and the measured pragmatism of someone who genuinely believes what they’re saying and wants to accomplish real things.
