Hello #PortfolioDay,

I'm Rowan, a freelance illustrator working with ttrpgs. I love to illustrate anything involving animals. I am currently open for both commercial and private commissions, so feel free to contact me.

A calico anthropomorphic cat. They have a genetically modified paw reminiscent of bee stingers. They wear white sci-fi body armour with mechanical wings attached. A DnD party attempts to rescue their horse from frozen water. We have a dwarven wizard, elven ranger, and human fighter. A swarm of ravens flies towards the viewer. A variety of spooky props for Crooked Moon ttrpg.

A 'cheat' I did was do some SMartschool classes. Got to work with talented teachers, meet other artists, and you get a review by an industry professional at the end. This way does require some investment, though, so may be less accessible
cynotherium.bsky.social
Don't worry if you don't hear back! A) the feedback in itself is valuable and b) some ADs like to keep an eye on improving talent for when they are ready
cynotherium.bsky.social
The next step is portfolio quality, and getting seen - both of these can be worked on by attending portfolio reviews. These are usually done at art conventions, some of which are online (I got consistent work by attending the online PaizoCon reviews)
cynotherium.bsky.social
So the first thing you should have is a portfolio of stuff that looks fitted towards the sort of projects you want to work on. In my case, that's fantasy realism. This should be quality over quantity - ADs shouldn't feel concerned about the quality they might receive

Oh, it's #PortfolioDay!

I'm Jamie, I work as a freelance graphic designer and digital painter.

i've worked on a bunch of stuff I can't post yet, so here are some of the projects I've done recently that I'm enjoying :) One day I might have a collection that matches, but it is not today XD
A book cover piece showing a pair of young boys readying themselves against danger, wielding water magic. Below and around them are witches, monsters, statues of religious figures and branches of trees that are reaching towards them. A rampant unicorn, with blood smeared around its mouth and hooves, showing that it has recently feasted. It is a monstrous animal, with pale fur and golden mane hair, and a vicious horn sprouting from the top of its head. It has a scroll cover it with the words ' Eat The Rich' emblazoned on it. An statue of a muscular angel, sat atop a huge stone, as he peers down on the world. An image of The Governor, a small tabby tabaxi monk in ornate garb with various influences. He wears tightly wrapped bands on his arms and hands, showing that he fights with his fists, but to the side it shows a gleaming, almost molten gold blade, that he uses as a spear or sword.

Hello #PortfolioDay!
I’m Runo, a freelance fantasy artist specializing in characters ✦🌿
A black and white drawing of a character with curly horns and long dark hair worn in two loose braids, surrounded by a forest background and a decorative frame. There's a scar running across their mid chest and ribs. The character is gently holding their hands over the scar, with a calm expression on their face, eyes closed. A black and white drawing of a long-haired character with antlers and fluffy ears, portrayed against a forest background. A circular shape frames their face from behind, and multiple sparkly shapes decorate the portrait. A black and white drawing of a character with long dark hair and curly horns, surrounded by stylized foliage. A symbolic dagger seems to be piercing their throat. The character has a calm expression - eyes closed and a subtle smile on their lips. A decorative and detailed black and white portrait of a long-haired character with pointy ears. They are dressed in fancy clothing and wear jewelry. Their eyes seem to be slightly glowing as they gaze at the viewer.

A humblewood wrangler monk flies through the air as she lassos a dinosaur! A large, masculine figure charges at the viewer, mud curling in a massive wave around him. He has a warthog’s head, and is bedecked in leather, red rope, and splatters of mud. Two foxes dance amongst a crowd of gala goers. The scene glows with golden light.

Illustration of a drow standing in front of a large white snake with wings. The drow has long white hair and dark green clothing with copper accents. He holds a dagger above his head with blue magic arcing between the blade and his hand. They are in the Underdark, with blue spores and mushrooms surrounding them. Illustration of the fellowship from the Fourth Age actual play. They are at a high altitude looking down into a valley with a river. From left: Theodas (bald elf, many scars, dark beard, golden interlocking armor, dull blue cape); Iairen (elf, medium brown skin, kinky brown hair with undercut and half up style, blue robes, holding a blue palantir); Mistiel (elf with dark brown skin, copper cape, long white box braids half up, golden armour); Eona (human, dark brown long hair with golden scales woven through, leathers and cape, holding a sword); Chicory (hobbit-elfish, lilac dress, pale skin, brown hair in loose waves, holding a wooden staff that crooks over and holds a glowing white stone); Aerlind (elf, dark hair, blue fine outfit, tanned skin, east asian features, holds an astrolabe in one hand). Illustration from first person view, showing a hand holding up an opalescent stone with a hole in the center. The stone has brass filigree, and through the hole is a view of a mountain sheep. The background is a mountainous landscape. There are slight magical effects showing that the view through the stone is a zoomed in view of the background. An alabaster gargoyle and a feminine figure dressed in black robes with their faces shadowed by hoods. The pair are within a gothic styled church, standing before an altar on a dais, preaching to spectators behind the POV. Candles cast plenty of light in the room despite the flames being purple, and all the decorations and the architecture is gothic in design. They look as though they are in the middle of performing a sermon in unison

And some rarely seen but still much loved (by me) black and white pieces. Chapter headers, a temporary tattoo design, and an interior full page illustration.

A chapter header from A Mourning Coat. A drawing of various sewing notions in ink lines and digital washes of grey- a pincushion, scissors shaped like a cassowary, a measuring tape, buttons and various spools of thread.

A chapter header from North Continent Ribbon. An ink drawing of a thick tome with an ornate 8-pointed star on the cover, an elaborate lock, and a long ribbon bookmark
ALT

A drawing, in ink, of a snake curling over a rectangular shape filled with a drawing of a hemlock plant. Where the snake overlaps the rectangle, it is scaled, where the snake is outside the rectangle, it is skeletal.
ALT

From Neon Hemlock's Unfettered Hexes: Queer Tales of Insatiable Darkness. A gouache and ink painting depicting a lonesome little house on an expansive prairie. Wind blows the grass and the very sky seems like it's pressing in on the structure. Light glows from one window.

A selection of nine portraits - mostly commissioned by various clients as well as two personal pieces. They’re all done digitally in painterly style with visible brushstrokes and deep colours. There are vampires, vieras, elves, lizards, dragons and other humanoid but ethereal creatures. Two painted book cover illustrations side by side, both showing a pale blond man and a brown-haired woman. The one on the left shows the figures lying down on the dark ground as they gaze longingly at one another. The one on the right has the man holding the woman in a dramatic pose as she awakens to her vampiric powers. Illustrations commissioned by Cat Rector for her novels: Coal Gets In Your Veins and Learning to Bleed. Two watercolour portraits displaying loose brushwork. On the left - Maelle from Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, a young girl with red hair in a ponytail. On the right - a woman with dark hair and flushed cheeks.
