I’m not sorry for saying this what they did to our captured relatives was beyond cruelty. They were stripped of their dignity, tortured with electricity, and treated like less than human. It was horror designed to erase their humanity.

Complaining that the prose is melodramatic just doesn't compute for me. Love is perhaps the most dramatic emotion! There is a single digit list of statements you can make in the English language more dramatic than "I am in love with you!" The prose should reflect that!
