It’s in so many foods and I live in fear of the dogs getting a hold of something containing it (eg food or gum someone discards).

My hot take is that people should refrain from buying foods/gums/toothpastes with xylitol aka birch sugar in it given how lethal even tiny amounts are to dogs. And foods containing it should have warning labels given how lethal even tiny amounts are and how impossible to tell what may contain it.
